The display on this is not as good as it should be for an envy product, but at this price, it's par for the course and shame on hp.

Model: 9S1R3UA
https://support.hp.com/vn-en/docu...0206834-16

35.6 cm (14.0 in) diagonal, WUXGA (1920 x 1200), multitouch-enabled, IPS, edge-to-edge glass, micro-edge, Corning® Gorilla® Glass NBT™, 300 nits, 62.5% sRGB

The price is great but the display is where they saved some money. Definitely usable and better than previous lower end displays, but you might be disappointed if you are used to most modern screens.
Tell me one windows pc manufacturer that doesn't have scary stories. I follow these laptop threads religiously and every single one has someone bashing the manufacturer. Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus, Acer, all of them.

So what stories have you heard about HP?
Black Friday?

At the very least its not a TN display. But for sure, miss the times when there used to be some IPS panels that were actually good. I remember having a Toshiba like from the fifth or fourth intel generation that had an actually really good display, looked at the specs of it, it was made by LG, color reproduction was quite good, didn't measure it but to my eyes it definitely looked closer to 90% or higher of the sRGB compared to many of the 60% sRGB IPS panels in more modern systems. Now it's almost you get one of these budget IPS displays or you get an OLED and there isn't much that can give any in between quality. Sure that old Toshiba was not as cheap as this one (600) but the display certainly was very much hitting above its price range back then. Even to this day there are many systems in that price range with worse displays. For sure if display is important there should be many deals coming for OLED display laptops, coming to mind the Costco HP 14 plus and the Zenbooks of last year around black friday time which were in the 600 range and the Vivobooks that were in the 400 range

The Dell XPS PCs have great screens, I buy used ones as I do not need the fastest machines.

How does this compare w/ the $379 from costco? Specs look very similar aside from screen size and storage and $100 cheaper... https://www.costco.com/.product.1815291.html
They are completely different classes of laptops especially size and weight. You may not care but they are definitely different (3.9 lbs vs 3.0).

Also Aspire is the lower tier for Acer while Envy is HP's mid tier, so expect better build quality from the Envy.

Envy also has 16:10 screen which favors productivity more than the 16:9 screen of the Aspire. I personally would not buy a 16:9 screen but again if you don't care, that's fine.

How are HP laptops? Heard too many scary stories about them.

Low build quality but good while they last. HP uses cheap wifi cards depending on the model which need to be replaced ($10-15). The hinges are the problem. They use cheap plastic and bad designs for how hinges are mounted to the plastic. This is sadly universal for any consumer Windows laptop. What this means is that if you travel a lot with your laptop and open and close the lid often, eventually you'll deal with broken hinges, more specifically broken plastic that the hinges are attached to. I'm dealing with this problem right now with a ~6 year old HP. Honestly not a bad amount of time considering it was a $290 laptop.

Funny how asking a question upsets the HP fanbois and pointing out my own personal experience with their low build quality. I have used laptops from various manufactuers and all the consumer level ones are crap unless you use your laptop as a home only device.

Here's further proof of how garbage the hinges are:
https://www.reddit.com/r/laptops/...a_year_in/

Google "HP Hinge Problems". You'll know more about what I'm talking about. Someone saying they like HP because they owned dozens of them is actually not a sign of quality. Makes me think they had so many because they fall apart.

Also another thing to keep in mind. The Envy line has essentially been watered down. It's not much better in build quality than their low end Pavilion lines. Anyone who is saying they are is completely and utterly clueless and gets easily hoodwinked with the cooler looking outer shell.

Feels like some of these laptop post deals are brigaded with people who are trying to ensure that nothing bad is said about the deal in any way or maybe people are so weird nowadays they plant themselves as fans of different PC manufacturers...

Does the nit level only matter if you're in a bright room or outside? Under normal indoor lighting is it still a factor? Thanks

300 nits is fine for indoors. I have seen this screen at a best buy, it's more than fine for normal use.

My family owned over a dozen over the years - overall, we are satisfied. Better than the Dells we owned.

This one has a much better CPU, passmark more than double the 7520U of the Costco one. With touch and better build, the BBY one is a better buy.

"more than fine for normal use" is super subjective. There's a reason the SRGB color space is hidden all the way in the product page on the HP site.

Almost every other IPS screen on the market is going to look better side-by-side simply because this screen can only produce a little over half of the SRGB color range. This is about as low-end as an IPS screen gets these days.. As I mentioned, they're trying to capitalize on the line's name.

Acceptable? Maybe.

Do we want to let fellow slickedealers know when the deal they are checking out is great price not a slick deal. Absolutely.

Scary stories? How many? 2 out of the millions they sell each year. I have my 13" Spectre with an Intel 6th Gen processor from 2016 as my main unit. Works perfectly.

I was replying to the nits or brightness of the screen for indoor use. Color accuracy is a different story but different people require different degrees of color accuracy. There are screen snobs then there are people who don't really care.
Have you actually seen the laptop in real life? I have. It was in a brightly lit bb store. It seemed fine to me. Good viewing angle, did not seem washed out, like I said, fine. I would not hesitate giving this to my older kids for school use.
Tell me a laptop with 16gb ram, touchscreen, with a better screen for 450 or less. I am waiting.
