My neighbor has the same V6 in his Honda as I do. When his Catalytic converters went bad, it cost over $2K to get them replaced. He used Dino oil though, so he did save $5 on his oil changes.....

That sounds more like an engine issue. Like the poster above talking about oil consumption.

You are right though that this anecdote sounds like an engine issue. If you have a bad ring pack, or a messed up PCV system (including the EGR in this one), you can have excessive oil consumption. That would poison the catalyst. At that point, you'll have other issues to worry about besides a bad cat.
"Dino" oil or not, if it meets the specs and it's the visc grade your car calls for, you're good to go.
EDIT: IN case we have another "Synthetic or nothing" argument, know that there was a court case involving the definition of "Synthetic" and it was determined that it was more branding/marketing than anything. Here's a synopsis: https://bobistheoilguy.

I've only used the cheapest recommended oil I could find. Remember in the early 2000's you could get motor oil for free after rebate and gasoline was only $1.25 a gallon?
