As good as dead on arrival with only 8GB of soldered RAM with no option to expand.

I love people seeing a $300 laptop and declaring it "dead on arrival" because it doesn't have top specs.

For casual use, 8gb is perfectly fine. If you need a cheap, basic laptop, this is a solid deal.

I love people talking casually like we're still in 2005 and software requirements haven't bloated in the past 20 years.

Try installing a fresh install of Windows 10/11 with all the bloat AI crap they've been shoving in there and using a modern browser with what, anything more than 2 tabs? You'll run into a wall quick. So yeah basically DOA.

8GB shouldn't even be sold anymore, unless you're talking about a RasberryPi.

I personally wouldn't use a PC with only 8gb of RAM but I think you are exaggerating this. I can see some casual user being fine checking his emails with several tabs open on a 8gb Windows PC (at least for now...).

And no, I'm not implying this laptop is a good deal. There are laptops with better processors and more RAM for not much more money. In fact there were deals for laptops with upgradeable RAM slots for this price or even lower recently so I don't recommend this.

HP 14 at Costco is going to be $350 with 12gb of RAM and a significantly better CPU.

Indeed! I have often been chided here on SD for saying 8GB RAM is sufficient for basic use. Heck, I have an old Asus w/ 4GB, and it works fine for web surfing & email, opening 2 or 3 tabs (maybe more, I don't know).

Yup. My daily driver is a $1200+ laptop with 32gb of RAM, OLED, etc... It's fantastic. But for $300, I wouldn't expect fantastic. I'd expect "fine" That's what this laptop is. It's fine. That's all it's trying to be and for most people, that's plenty.

For a laptop advertised as light, that's not light.

Will this be faster than my I5 9th gen? I like the battery life of this one but I'm not too crazy about the num pad. Just looking for a casual laptop with all day battery life. 8gb is fine.

Total exaggeration. Have 64GB on my main system, but totally fine on a laptop with 8GB and 20 tabs open. This is fine for majority of the population. It's the minority that would never buy a $300 laptop that come in here anyways to gripe.

Lol, what are you then? The defender of a moot point? That low end laptops should remain 8gb and totally fine? lol

There's literally no reason why laptops today can't come with 16GB as the baseline. RAM costs are low enough that it's just about manufacturers choosing to cut corners, oh yeah let's make it soldered too. And sure, 8GB might work for some, but it's easy to max out fast, especially with the way apps and browsers are evolving. It would make way more sense if 16GB were the minimum spec for modern laptops.

But hey lets just go for bare-ass minimum yeah, maybe 4GB? Keep those profit margins up.

8gb is acceptable today. Whats not acceptable is not even giving the option to upgrade ever.

Yup, manufacturers do that on purpose. Why cannibalize sales of their more expensive laptops by making their purposely-built low-end laptops upgradeable or just enough for a more-than-basic user?

They're pinching pennies far more than 8GB vs 16GB. Like using 1x1 WiFi cards in low-end laptops instead of 2x2, when the cost difference between them is far less than 8 vs 16GB. So 16GB baseline isn't happening anytime soon.
