These have ANC. The XM4s are my preferred headphones for flights.

These are fine earphones but if you are looking for noise cancelling you need the Bose Quietcomfort Earbuds II or similar
I have a pair of the Bose QCII which became the Ultras because of multiple warranty claims, but I hate them because of their connection issues. The QCII would randomly disconnect from my phone while using them, causing them to pop because of the ANC and quickly reconnect. There was no rhyme or reason for it. Both QCII and Ultra will randomly not connect when you pull them out of the case, and sometimes won't charge. I'm assuming both are related to the poor connection with the pins inside the case. I probably should just get the Sonys...

Have you tried the XM5s as well? I wasn't sure if your comment was more to say that XM4 is superior to the XM5 or that you prefer Sony headphones for flights.

I had bose buds ii and lost it during a vacation. I didn't like the sound quality of it but its anc was amazing. I bought these on the last deal, sound quality is perfect and incomparable with bose, but the ANC is kinda non existent in these! It doesn't block anything

Sorry to hear that. I connect my Bose QCII with a Pixel 7 and Pixel 3a and they are rock solid.

They are bigger than I'd like but that's really the problem of people who have the misfortune to look at me.

I really wanted the Sony XM5 to work out but they had zero noise cancelling for me. Looking on Reddit before I returned them I could see people who raved about the Sony XM5 ANC and others like me who found no noise cancelling at all.

With the Bose there's a 1-second delay after I put them in my ears and then a noticeable drop in outside noise leaking in.

Probably ear shape. I've used Jbl pro 2, xm3, galaxy buds 2, etc. I think they don't work because of your ear shape, considering how highly they're reviewed. Could also be a firmware issue, QC or your settings in the Sony app.

same for me. my QC II buds kept disconnecting, at one point the left one permanently disconnected, so under warranty, bose replaced it with the ultra

the ultra now has similar connection issues. Sometimes it doesn't connect, sometimes it disconnects while in use. i imagine connection issues will also eventually make this pair unusable

it's also extremely bassy, lots of lower mid, low, deeper lower frequency bass. so while it's great for movies, it makes music way too warm

tho of all my earbuds, these indisputably have the the best ANC

i also have the sony XM5s and they sound better (less bassy, more neutral) but anc isn't as good, and fit is finnicky with the foam tips. i also worry about how or where to get replacement foam tips once these wear out

if it feels like it doesn't block anything, you may need to use the larger tips

when i use the middle size tips, one side had some leakage or opening and doesn't seal, so anc didn't really work

switch to the larger size, which sealed, and it has great noise cancelling before ANC even turns on. it's a physical foam barrier blocking sound, there's no way noise cancelling is "non existent" if it seals. it's the same as putting in foam ear plugs

they just don't block mids as good as bose, so things like voices and higher pitched noises come through more easily

OMG, the most dire of insults - ear shape!

Yeah, I dunno. I really wanted the XM5s to work but their ANC was totally absent. Maybe a bad pair?

Whatever, the Bose Earbuds II are working out fine for me and I'm happy with that.

because the tips are foam, i had to turn/twist them when putting them in my ears, to get a good seal. if you get a good seal, noise around you will immediately be lowered by the foam physically and passively blocking noise

if noise didn't immediately lessen when you put them in, then they didn't seal

Bose quietcomfort ultra earbuds (Costco currently is having a on sale for $230 with $50 gift card) have better ANC than the xm5, and it is noticeable. Both of them are poor performers for calls with xm5 still better than Bose.
