You can fix that problem by getting a more expensive bike. Wink But seriously, if a $700 bike meets your needs, it's likely that you don't need all the features of a Garmin and could get by with an app on an old cell phone.

Though expensive, for people that ride a lot, the Garmins are really nice with tons of features, great battery life, screens visible in sunlight, rain proof, seamless integration with other ride apps, and easily connect to auxiliary power meters, heart rate monitors, cadence, speed sensors, etc.

Having the 830, the price drop on the 840 will need to be substantial for me to upgrade. That said, the reviews appear to support an upgrade for a few reasons including the extra buttons (of all things). The new interface and better menus also are good reasons to get the newer unit.

If you do a lot of climbing and don't always load a route, the hill detection feature (on 540 and above) is a GREAT new feature. In a nutshell, the computer will know when you're about to start a climb and give you all of the details (length, grade, etc) with the assumption that you're going all the way to the top.

I saw the upgraded climbing screen with nice details the 830 doesn't give you. I don't really use that feature that much, so not an issue. But for some, that's a killer feature.

I like the idea of having a mix of touch screen and buttons as I have to lock my screen a lot to avoid unintended inputs from dripping sweat. Improved interface and menus is something the 830 needs as well.

I am wondering how much more accurate the newer models are over the last generation. Strava KOMs are keeping me going and at times I am positive I've got one and the recorded time turns out to not even be a PR.

You can get much more reasonable price ones that will do everything any normal person will need for much MUCH less but it won't be as nice especially if you don't need navigation. You can get a coospo gps from amazon for $40 that has ANT+ bluetooth, and works with all the sensors it just isn't as slick and doesn't have nav. Or if you want to go fancy you can get a Bryton or IGPsport for around $150 and get something that is slick and does nav. You might miss out on a few features that the garmin 540 has but if you don't use em then it doesn't matter.

The real question are why are bikes so expensive? 1k min and 2k to get decent component equipped bike.
I think the only people who hold this belief are people that spend too much time online lol I admit that I got wrapped up in it recently when looking to upgrade my bike, but I ended up buying a $1200 bike that more than exceeds any expectations I had for a good bike and then felt a bit foolish that I was considering going from a $400 REI bike to a $2500 bike like that was the bare minimum that was worth buying.

I spent a year and a half cycling most days on my $400 REI bike and it was the nicest bike I'd ever owned up to that point. I wasn't in the forums and on reddit or YouTube watching people say that if you don't have wireless shifting on a carbon frame then you're wasting your time. I'm convinced that most people could buy a sub-600 dollar bike and be totally fine for years as long as they properly maintain it.

For what it's worth, I bought a 540 about this time last year, used it on several rides over two weeks, then exchanged it for an 840. I wish I could say it was become of some super intense/useful data set or riding-specific feature, but it was just the touch screen. For me, it's just way easier to use (especially while riding) with the impressively-sensitive touch screen rather than buttons.

FYI, Gambacicli (a very reliable Italian store) has the 840 for €350, with shipping it comes down to approx $380 (no taxes or custom fees charged on US orders below $800). I ended up purchasing the varia rt515 and the edge 840 base for approx $500, ordered Tuesday evening and had them delivered this morning.
