if you haven't been through this before, you pay up front and then after examining the condition of your trade in 2-3 weeks later you will get a refund up to the amount you were offered. If the phone is in great shape you do get the full amount, it's not a scam.
Make certain to remove your Google account from the phone before factory resetting it so the factory reset protection doesn't kick in, or you'll get zero. You can test this by resetting it, going through setup again quickly without logging into wifi or your account, skip setting a pin, making sure you get through to the app launcher, then you know it's good. Finally, reset it again.
