I own a pair of these. Love 'em. No experience with Sundara refurbs but these are some of the best headphones you can buy under $400.

Great set of headphones. I've owned the 2020 update for a few years, and this is a great price to get into a HiFi headphone.
If you aren't familiar with open back, note these are not ideal for shared/noisy environments. Probably also perform best with a dedicated headphone amp. I mainly use a Geshelli Labs J2, but also have an Audioquest Dragonfly Red. The factory cable sucks pretty bad, as far as being rubbery and coiled up. I did swap out for an upgraded longer balanced audio cable.

I have such mixed feelings about hifiman. They offer incredibly good sound for the money, but in my experience buying them is like playing a lottery: Some people get a pair of headphones that sound as good as others several times the price, and they work great for years. Others get a pair that have an immediate issue, need to do an RMA swap, and then get a good pair (with some doing this 2 or 3 times before getting a good pair). The most unlucky people get a pair that sound great and then break right after the warranty ends.

There's a guy on reddit today claiming he got a new pair of these from amazon, with the hifiman seal intact, that have white mold on the grill foam.

I own about $8000 worth of high-end headphones and none of them are hifiman. Their support is good and will take care of issues within the warranty period, but I don't want to have to do the RMA dance at all.

Concur. If you have very big and protruding ears, these MAY be slightly inconvenient with the round earcups. But all in all, they're the definition of prosumer grade planar headphones. And at $180 it's a steal.

Oh and read up on how to take care of planars

If sub bass is more to liking, go with the wood cup closed back Sundaras. Then modify them with a foam insert to fix midrange performance if it doesn't fit your taste. 99.00 on Hifiman and no coupon necessary. I love mine.

Lack of sub-bass is an issue for pretty much all open-back designs though, isn't it? IIRC planar magnetic designs can have a little better extension but still can't match closed-back designs, would be very curious to hear of any open-back cans that retain decent bass punchiness

A lil more for the refurb edition xs to have better sub bass extension and then apply the oratory eq and you get a reasonably punchy result.

I mean yeah. You trade amazing detail for sub bass, and vice versa when you go closed back, just physics

I picked up theEdition XS (refurbished) [hifiman.com] and could not be happier. They arrived quickly and were in what appeared to be a new sealed box. I use their R2R EF400 [hifiman.com]in balanced mode to drive them for the ultimate experience.

Endgame headphones (need amp) for Beats pricing. Can't really go wrong here if you are into high fidelity sound. Great deal!

I bought a pair of these in a previous offer here last year, also the refurbs. Came in a proper box, with the headphone stand and in apparently new condition. They've performed as I'd hoped and likely will be my go-to headphones indefinitely as this is the top end of my budget. They haven't shown signs of poor build and have been dropped (blush) a few times over the year. However, the cable as others have written is poor quality and after a year, there's enough wear on the points directly below the plugs that a bit of duct tape has become involved until I get around to buying something better. That doesn't bother me and the headphones themselves have been durable despite all the bad rep from other owners. I run them through an O2+ODAC amp that I picked up from the thrift store for $9.95 a couple of years back and I'm happy. I've also run them through a Qudelix amp with a balanced cable and honestly couldn't tell from the unbalanced kind, but I'm old and my ears likewise. YMMV.
