It converts 2:1 now. So you buy 12 months of core, apply to account, then buy one month of ultimate. Should give you six months.

I had an XBox Live account a few years back, but it's been idle since then. Do they still offer the $1 upgrade? And if they do, am I eligible if I did it many years ago? I don't mind getting a new gamertag if I could get a better deal. Also, what's considered a good deal nowadays for Gamepass?

They did away with the $1 trial so you pretty much have to buy 1 month of GPU to convert now. For US codes, $5-6/month (like this deal) is about the lowest you can get for GPU. If you're willing to use VPN for other countries' codes, sometimes you can get down to below $4/month.
