chip design and mostly made by chinese companies lowered the price significantly.

This forced Sony, lg, and samsung to also lower their overpriced TV's.

TCL is the best thing to happen for the TV market. Quality TV's at crazy good prices.
I always felt Vizio was the major "no-name" brand that chipped away at the exorbitant prices when LCD's were getting well-established, especially during the final days of $80 Monster HDMI cables.

10 years ago weren't 4K TV $5,000-$8,000? (Not same brand or quality I guess)

Technology sure does move fast.

It's not just about resolution. I wouldn't be shocked if there are 1080p sets that outperform this TV in terms of viewing angles, contrast, brightness, blacks, etc. I bought a cheap Insignia Black Friday TV and right out of the box it was terrible watching content. It has worse viewing angle than a 10+ year old Vizio which was a mid range TV at the time. 4k HDR content didn't look much better than 1080p content on my old Vizio.

HDR is the main upgrade in my opinion with new TVs, more than even 4k resolution. Sadly, these low end TVs generally struggle with HDR content and I find that they are not better than higher end SDR 1080p sets from years ago.

For gaming 4k is noticeable in my opinion but there are other factors to take into account. Refresh rate (60Hz vs 120Hz) is one of them. Again, these low end budget TVs are always 60Hz and like I said earlier, have poor HDR capabilities. Not much different than TVs from the old 1080p days.

Yea my TLC 5 series died 1 month out of warranty. I would not say quality because the issue with mine was/is a very common issue with these TV's. It is an economical throw away TV IMHO based on my experience.

Seems like a crazy deal
It's not. These are absolute bottom of the barrel. If you just need something for a guest room that's never used… then by all means. There is no such thing as a good quality 50" TV for this price. This is the TV equivalent of a throwaway toothbrush.

YMMV. I have a cheap insignia still kicking after 7+ years that I use nightly in my bedroom. I'm on my third Samsung tv in the living room in same timeframe. One of them was very expensive and died right after warranty was up. I don't plan to buy expensive TVs ever again. Sure I can buy a warranty that costs the same as a cheap tv. Or I could just save the money and buy another cheap one if I have an issue. Much easier than dealing with a warranty. I don't really notice much difference between cheap and expensive TVs anyway these days nor do I care. I think people are crazy (I was once one of them) to be spending 1k plus on TVs if you're not a gamer but that's just me.

I like this $238 58" Hisense Roku TV at Walmart, paired with a $43 5-year Walmart warranty. I'm counting on it dying before the 5 years is up so I can get the current, newer model then.

Returnable until January 31 too, in case I hate it.

No. rtings.com says it's terrible for HDR movies and mediocre at everything else:
https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...eries-2022

The Hisense Q6 at Costco is $40 more. It's slightly bigger (55" vs 50"), 3 year warranty, and has a better screen according to rtings.com. I would buy that over this. But the Hisense has bad viewing angles, so you have to take that into consideration.

If you plan on using this TV for a bedroom or sitting directly in front of the screen (not off center), get the Hisense. If you plan on using this with people sitting at different angles, then maybe this is a better choice.

3.3 inches deep..ughhh... i guess for this price range this will be the lowest...
How much is the TV mount depth these days..... slim mount that can be pulled out -

Target is to find something under 2.5" Wall to TV surface...looks like its not possible at all under $200 range.. TV for Niche - vertical mount

I bought this TV around this time last year for approximately the same price to replace an old "dumb" Insignia TV in my bedroom with a Roku stick. While I preferred the Roku interface to the Fire TV interface, I have gotten used to it. The picture quality and sound quality were both a significant upgrade from the ancient Insignia TV I was using. I was even able to install RetroArch on the TV itself and play old NES, SNES, etc... ROMs off a USB flash drive. Anything you can do to a firestick you can do to this TV. I was so impressed with how far these budget TVs have come that immediately went back and bought a 58" one for my living room. Are there better TVs out there? Yes. Are there better TVs out there for this price? Not if you are in the market for a budget TV and understand you are getting a budget TV.

You could get a 4K TV for $450 back in 2013. Granted the quality of the display wasn't great (HDMI 1.4 limited 4K to 30hz, color balance wasn't very good, etc) but it WAS still a true 4K TV. I used one as a monitor for a while. I preferred having it at 1080p with 120hz for most things, but for slower paced games, cranking them up to 4K really made them sharp.

Just picked one up to replace one that just went out from Best Buy. I got the 5 year extended warranty as well. Looks good and It also comes with 3 mo of apple TV free. I'm satisfied with my purchase.
