m12 has great automotive tools that are compact. often have sales. m12 lights are incredible. ergonomics on the impact driver and drill are awful.
makita 18v is a much larger battery system. makita does not have a lot of sales for desirable tools. ergonomics are incredible.
i own both. i go with what's the cheapest and on sale. i often find myself wishing i stuck with one battery platform that essentially good ergonomics, good sale prices (holidays).
I originally bought the M1 12 impact driver and hammer drill, but I returned it. and got the subcompact. fell in love with ergonomics. then i upgraded to the flagship 18v impact driver on sale, which may not be the strongest on numbers alone but it's an absolute gem to use for projects at home. love my makita tools, wish they had better sales. their XWT impact wrench is amazing (got it on amazon used for $100) and their mid torque ($140 amazon used) . but the full price is ridiculous and i'll never pay the full asking price for that when cheaper alternatives exist.

To your point of loving the ergonoics but not great sales on the Makita, I'd throw out another option of Metabo HPT. It has similar ergonomics to the Makita, but their 2pc kit is $149 and has a better batteries (2.0Ah vs 1.5) and more powerful tools.
I got an expanded set a few years ago on an amazing clearance deal (https://slickdeals.net/e/12518770-makita-lxt-subcompact-18v-bl-3-tool-cx300rb-150-tax-ymmv?v=1&src=SiteSearch), and really love the form factor of these tools. The ergonomics are great, as mentioned, and the fact that it fits into my already existing Makita battery line is a bonus. The ultra light weight of the drill and impact driver are amazing given the power to do most jobs. I highly recommend the line.

Have had these for years, beaten the shit out of them, and they've been absolutely great. Light, compact, powerful enough for virtually all tasks. Plus you can set up the charger to sing, what more could you want?

On the batteries, the 1.5 Ah included into this set is for a reason - a weight reduction. 2.0Ah batteries are heavier.
On the deals from Makita - they are not that rare, if you follow them. I am in Makita ecospace, and was able to buy almost all tools from these sales.
On the OP deal - this set is incredible. I bought one for $150 from AWD last year for my kid. It is his go-to set around the house. The only minor complain I have is it used to come in a cubical bag which I liked more as it had more space for other accessories. The included bag is kind of small (although is still a good quality).

I own 18v Makita and 12v M12 Fuel. The Makita tools are built better, IMO. The ergonomics are better. They almost never have sales, however. The M12 fuel is great, works well, and you can often pick them up for good prices.
I've had the Makita a long time, and have always like Makita. They deserve the praise, IMO.
I decided to mix the ecosystems because I felt I wanted to find more opportunities to explore more and better tools over time via sales and/or availability of tools - I felt m12 provided that.
This is their lowest performance offering on the 18V LXT line.
That's not true, their brushed older 18v stuff that finds its way into kits is is les quality than these.
I love Makita, heavily invested in their 18/36V LXT line but it does have shortcomings. Since HD has essentially become a show room for TTI Makita receives less display space and other than speciality stores or Mom and Pop hardware stores it's not something you can easily buy locally, especially at a discount.
