Kirkland/Amazon Basics/SuperTech synthetic is all made by Warren. Mobil 1 is likely "better" but Warren is much better than good enough. It's oil, just get the correct weight and put it in. Here is a good video by the highly respected Project Farm

Warren Industries. Check out performance tests of Mobil and Castrol vs Costco/Walmart/Amazon oils on YouTube. Name brand oil isn't worth it anymore

Do you happen to know of any tests/studies about using these non-Euro spec oils on Euro vehicles? I've heard a lot of people say that the only important thing is changing your oil regularly. But I'm a bit reluctant to stray away from the spec that my VW asks for. And unfortunately, that means I can't partake in these types of deals at the moment.
The important thing for German vehicles is to make sure the oil you use meets the oil specification requirements such as vw 502.00. It should be in your owners manual and also stated on the oil container if it meets spec. I don't want to give you more info than you want but if you are interested, look up oil analysis and "bobistheoilguy." Oil has different additive packs for wear protection.

For my VW GTI, I look out for deals on castrol and Mobil 1.

Yea that's what I've been doing too. But was wondering if I was being overly cautious, or if the oil spec is really that important based on the data out there.

In terms of BITOG and other forums, I've seen so much mixed advice that I just keep it safe and stick to the slightly more expensive VW spec'd 5W-40 oils that my mk6 GTI manual specifies.

Seriously, I don't know why this deal is getting so much love. My benchmark is always $3 or less per quart

Can the European car formula be used in place of dexos?
Some. Depends on the engine. If you need an API SP or SN+, make sure you check the certifications. Most of the 0W 30 and 0W 20s will work.

I used to have a VW and would exclusively use Mobil 1 as it met the VW508 spec. There were many issues with sludging if the wrong oil was used. I would never use an oil that does not meet manufactures requirements. It's only $10-15 more per oil change to use the correct stuff - follow the owner's manual.

Specs are specific for the European cars. Don't cheap out. Use the exact spec.

Paypal ending the free return shipping killed any real advantage FCP had, I still get things like brake pads from them.
If anyone needs VW508, Mobil 1 0W-20 ESP X2 is 508 certified and about $27 for the 5qt at wally, wait for rebates if you can.

Without sending ppl down the BITOG rabbithole....

Always check the bottom of the jug for sediment, if there is any (usually off white) then the additives have fallen out of suspension. You should plan for an early oil change.

Project Farm is good for most things, BUT, he does use the one armed bandit for the oil test.... that's the only issue I have with his tests. You can run shampoo on that bearing wear test and get good results. That's why late night additive infomercials use them.

IF you are worried about oil life, get it tested at oil change or pull a sample from the dipstick tube. Blackstone has a standard oil analysis for $35, multiple other companies as well. The additive pack for VW508 will last approx 9000miles based on how I drive. 10k oil change isn't that insane if you don't take short trips, cruise control on the highway for most of the miles. Obviously, if you only take short trips to the market, sunday service, your oil will not last as long. That's what used oil analysis will help you determine when to change.
That said, 6 month change will service most drivers well and a good balance between cost and engine protection.

YMMV. literally.

I'm in NJ so it's not too bad for me to ship it back to CT. It's not just oil though, I get brake pads, wipers, spark plugs, serpentine belts, diff fluids, trans fluids, coils and a bunch of other stuff and use their lifetime warranty.

FCP only list European cars but cross reference part numbers and you'll be surprised that many parts are compatible with Asian cars too.
