I have had one for a couple years in my system and I have written 36TB of data to the drive. It is my system boot drive. I applied the update as soon as it was released.

What's difference between this and the one without heatsink? I have a mini pc, not sure if this will fit.

end of 2022/beginning of 2023 was when the firmware went out
If I just bought and installed a 1TB 990 from Best Buy yesterday.. would I have to do this update?

Did you order it? I read that it was a mislabeled 1 TB. Curious to know if anyone that orderdd it got the 2 TB version.
It was in fact the 1TB version. Thankfully, Amazon was nice and sent me the 2TB and refunded the difference so ended up being a win.

chance is next to zero you need to do it. the 980s and 990s have been in such high demand the chance that you got a near 2 year old firmware is next to zero.

Aw not even a Mac with thunderbolt 3 enclosure that does direct PCIe link… no love for Macs
I've updated the firmware for Samsung SSDs in Thunderbolt 3 enclosures several times and each time it went fine. At least for Windows Samsung Magician basically treats the drive like it's internal since the PCIe is tunneled.

The only difference is the one with the heatsink is more expensive. It has a thick and high quality heatsink and I was able to use it in two different laptops that I owned without removing the heatsink.

If you are concerned about the firmware issues, you can read the comments when this 2TB SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD with Heatsink was selling for $100 in July 2023. At that time, the bad firmwares had already been fixed with updates. New stock had the latest fixed firmware at that time. In my situation, the one that I bought from Best Buy in July 2023 had a Production Date of 04/24/2023 which had the latest firmware version 5B2QGXA7 (at that time) that fixed the corruption problem.

I was able to get them to reorder the 2tb and apply a $50 credit, so wasn't a total waste.
They offered $65 to me when I received it. Ordered at full price. Will see how it goes.

Phison owned Nextorage 2TB drive is $115. There's still a $25 Samsung tax here.

So no way to do it through PS5?
Unfortunately no. The best way to do update the SSD for your PS5 is to get a USB to M.2 enclosure or adapter, whichever you prefer. Connect it to a PC and download Samsung magician. Your data should never be erased while updating to a new firmware, but there's always a possible risk. Very low, but important to remember in case you want to backup your saves before hand.
If you have PS+ you can backup to the cloud.

I have this 2TB 980 pro and it works great!
I won't upgrade till the 4TB 990 pro comes down in price. Especially with the PS5 pro out now, we most likely won't see a PS6 till 2028/29.
