I have this rack and it's MOST EXCELLENT.

Some things to note:

- It's definitely worth getting the built-in cable lock.
- if you have a modern large truck and do you want the tailgate to come down? You need the drop hitch extension.
- If you have a 2.5 or 3 inch receiver with a sleeve you cannot use the sleeve with the stabilizer in the drop hitch. You need to make sure you order the drop hitch for your maximum receiver size.
- 20 inch wheels will fit in the standard basket, but the forks will slightly touch. If you want only rubber contact order the 20 inch basket for your kids.

Any opinions on Thule's Revert vertical rack which was just released? Been in the market for a 6 bike carrier. I currently own other Thule racks & like Thule's 1-key system. But the Velocirax costs less (even more so with this sale) and seems comparable in function but it only has a 2 year warranty compared to Thule's lifetime warranty. Also, I have a few drop bar bikes which would require more spacing between bikes. The Thule has 11" spacing between baskets, the Velocirax 6 has 10". Velocirax makes the X rack with 15" spacing but unfortunately only up to a 5 bike carrier.

It will affect your gas mileage more than a 1up rack where the bikes are horizontal. The front tires stand up higher than the roof line and do add drag. I never noticed much of a difference from a vertical rack at 55mph on our minivan, but going 75 on the interstate dropped a few mpg from normal. Might be less noticeable on a truck than a more aerodynamic minivan. I need to carry 5 or 6 bikes at a time, so vertical racks are really the only option (and they work great).

If you want the best vertical rack, it's Alta Rack. I had to go to an Alta Rack so I could use it on my travel trailer (it's the only one I know approved for that use), and the Alta Rack is built so well I will be handing down to my kids someday. It has a lifetime warranty, but there's no way I will ever need it. I previously had a Lolo Rack, which I actually preferred because it carried bikes by the handlebars regardless of any wheel size (perfect for any kids bikes, fat bikes, road bikes, etc.). Velocirax is probably my third choice out of the vertical racks on the market, but it is still built very well and the 2 year warranty wouldn't deter me if it otherwise works best for you.

Wow. I didn't know about Alta Rack - pricey, but nice. Good to hear the build quality matches the price.

Just an fyi. In my experience Alta will not honor their lifetime warranty, instead they will sell you replacement parts, or upgraded parts, thus acknowledging that the original parts were inferior. I will never buy another Alta.

The opposite of 1Up and Thule (and likely Yakima) They will keep sending you the plastic parts that break for free.

I've had two warranty claims with Thule. Both full replacements of the items no problem. The one was probably my fault by overtightening the hitch tightening mechanism on a bike rack & stripping the threads. But they sent me a new bike rack regardless.
