Why would anyone want the best source and best picture quality to die ?

Is this the one that gets stuck playing triple layer discs?
Yes. I know because I own two of these. I often have to disconnect the power and plug it back in to get it to work; using the power button on the front doesn't work.

I bought Sony for years because they used to make consistently high-quality products, but I learned my lesson.

it caters to an extremely small crowd and why not just download the full damn version to a server or SSD
In other words, pirate. Man, the IQ of people is astounding.

These things should be on close-out by now. Since there's not many places to rent 4K Blu-ray discs. You pretty much have to buy them and they're rather expensive
The reason not many places rent them is because they're NOT expensive. For example, Oppenheimer is currently available on 4K disk from Amazon for $20, while buying the streaming version is $15. I can buy the disk, rip and stream it, but you can't buy the streaming version and rip it to get the benefits of a disk. Also, streaming versions can be retroactively edited, disappear completely, have no resale value, and can't be loaned to others.

This was the experience I had with this model (went through several returns before I gave up on this model), but this was back around 2018 so I would hope they fixed the problem by now.

Unfortunately, they haven't. I've kept the firmware updated but still run into the problem.

Then you own them.

But you can "own" with digital!

Ask Redbox customers.

Production companies have already modified some digital movies, TV shows, even books for content to appeal to a "modern" audience, so having physical media is the only way to ensure keeping the original content as it was intended to be before its violated for aforementioned "modern" audience.

If I recall correctly this player does not support SACD playback.
You'll have to wait for a sale on the m2.
It actually does. The cheapest SACD player currently available...
