- You need to establish a Verizon account
- Go to Account, Bill, Payment methods
- Add a credit card
- If you have other Verizon lines, make sure you verify your Auto Pay is still pointing to the bank account
- From a NON Verizon phone, call 800-837-4966
- Enter the phone number for the line you want to pay off
- Tell the robo attendant "pay off device"
- Robo attendant will confirm the payoff amount ($299) and if you would like to process on credit card ending in xxxx (what you have on file)
- * Say yes, and that's it.
*** How to update Apple purchase date ***
- From your Verizon online account, go to Account, Bill, Documents & receipts
- Download the Customer Agreement PDF that has the service agreement and IMEI (shown as Device ID), and barcodes
- Go to https://checkcoverage.a
pple.com - Enter serial number
- If it says no purchase date found, continue to create a case and request a call back
- Upload the PDF
- After the call back they said it could take up to 5 days for the date to be reflected
- I checked the serial after 5 minutes and it was updated
*** Request early unlock (huge YMMV but worth a shot) ***
- Login to your Verizon account
- Start a chat
- Ask them to submit a "request for early SIM unlock on your behalf"
- For reason, simply say "device is paid in full"
- Be ready for some pushback or if you want PUK unblock, or porting pin - just state the same
- If they say it cannot be done, tell them politely that you are aware they cannot do it, and they need to send a request up the line
- In my case they send to contact in 10 days (not holding my breath this will actually happen but worth a shot)
*** Disconnectiong line ***
- Login to your Verizon account
- Start a chat
- Request an agent
- If asked, about plans/service
- Say disconnect line
- They will try to offer you other options or to disconnect at a later date
- Insist you need the line disconnected now
- If asked for a reason, say you cannot give them one
- Verify total under Account, Bill, Next bill estimate - about $7 for 3 days of service
*** Instant unlock using SIM Swap for ATT (YMMV) ***
- After getting the phone and paying it off fully, make some calls/texts and make sure it shows up on ATT account
- Transfer the eSIM to an unlocked, steps might vary depending on iPhone/android.
- Make some calls with that phone and make sure it shows up on the account now.
- Now go to ATT.com/device unlock and select non ATT customer and provide imei.
- Make sure you reply yes to the confirmation email ATT sends
- Only cancel the account after you are able to unlock.

dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.
Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.
If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

now for the trade in Iphone 16. it is a credit spread over 36 months. the moment you cancel ATT , depend on how many months left, you own the rest of the money on it. This is the way AT&T use it to keep you use their services for 3 years.
After I get the phone I go to Walmart store and pay in full for phone.
Then I immediately call Verizon and cancel plan which prevents me from getting a Verizon bill.
Wait 60 days to phone to unlock but I should keep phone activated but doesn't have to be on a plan.
If this is all correct someone please let me know and thanks to everyone for the deal.
1. For whose of you who bought phones and paid off at the store, how did you find out whether your store carries the phone and will honor the deal since it says online only?
2. How do I pay in full when I get the shipped phone? Go to a Walmart store or Verizon store? If I go to a Verizon store, will they let me pay in full without activation?
3. My understanding is that I have to pay in full within 3 days and cancel to get the activation fee back, is that true?
TIA
please advise tya

edit: I unlocked Equifax only and it worked
I decided to sit out this deal, because just like the first commenter in this thread who wrote that the juice isn't worth the squeeze, I feel similarly. There is uncertainty about whether you get the phone in time to cancel (i.e., what if it ships on a Friday and you get it on Tuesday) and whether you'll get that $35 credited/refunded. In general, Verizon Postpaid plans are relatively expensive and do not make sense for me long term (at least not at this time), so there's time spent just creating the account and also going through all the steps to close the account out. The Apple trade-in value for an iPhone 14 is currently "up to $300" which is the max amount given for a phone trade in, and the Apple Store gift card equivalent is probably about $20 less than that. (I'm sure you can get more for a like-new iPhone 14 on other resale sites, but that takes more effort as well.) It takes a few days after cancelling the plan to wait for Verizon to update what you owe them in terms of plan prorated cost, so that is more time feeling uncertain that you won't be on the hook for about $100 worth of cost for first-month service, because all I had was a record of the Verizon chat (which I did by chat so I could have at least a screenshot of something where I definitely communicated that I wanted to cancel my unlimited plan, effective <the date of my chat, I think it was two days after my date of activation> because I don't know how a phone call could be as easily proven as a customer asking to cancel on the date of the call versus leave it up to the representative to interpret that as asking to cancel at the end of the plan month). Even though because I have gone through this process once before and can tolerate the uncertainty (mainly of not knowing if I'd get a prorated bill for service and how much that would cost) a little better, I don't need/want an iPhone 14 (for $299 that will unlock in 60 days) enough to go through the process. But that's my perspective. I also have a 13 and it is very similar to the 14--yet another reason it is not worth it to me. I can't speak to how easy it will be to go through all the steps for the current deal, but it isn't necessarily smooth sailing. This deal is a good deal for some, even some who want to get the deal, cancel the plan, and wait 60 days to have an unlocked iPhone 14 (perhaps even with 256 GB storage) that they paid $299 plus sales tax on $299, plus probably <$20 in additional plan costs/taxes (if you manage to cancel within the 3-day window to have your activation fee refunded), so maybe a chance of paying a total of about $330-$340? It's not bad, but it takes some time, effort, and willingness to tolerate uncertainty.
Or if there's an 16pm bf sale I'd take that 2.
