Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

"*** Request early unlock (huge YMMV but worth a shot) ***

Login to your Verizon account
Start a chat
Ask them to submit a "request for early SIM unlock on your behalf"
For reason, simply say "device is paid in full"
Be ready for some pushback or if you want PUK unblock, or porting pin - just state the same
If they say it cannot be done, tell them politely that you are aware they cannot do it, and they need to send a request up the line
In my case they send to contact in 10 days (not holding my breath this will actually happen but worth a shot)

*** Disconnectiong line ***

Login to your Verizon account
Start a chat
Request an agent
If asked, about plans/service
Say disconnect line
They will try to offer you other options or to disconnect at a later date
Insist you need the line disconnected now
If asked for a reason, say you cannot give them one
Verify total under Account, Bill, Next bill estimate - about $7 for 3 days of service"

If I want to try unlock with Verizon, should I cancel or should I unlock first? Just paid off the device. Thanks!

Also, after paying off the device, should I remove my credit card as payment method from Verizon account? Thanks again!

Don't. Use the automated system. Make sure you have your credit card saved as a payment method on your account first.

what happens if I use the customer service to pay it off? The automated service doesn't let me pay off the phone until 12/13. The custumer service representative allowed me.

Also, how do I confirm whether my device is fully paid off? Is the information in my account that it's paid off?

did you get an email from verizon when you sign up for the monthly plan? its odd that i sign up for a plan and verizon never sent me any email confirmations.
i received email but it had partial account number for this order. this time, i was able to activate the phone directly by booting it up.

last year when I did this, walmart delayed shipping and then I could not activate it. It took me additional week after delivery to get it activated by someone in store. online support was not able to do it. in the meantime, verizon had already mailed me by post estimated invoice which had account number. i used that to get in touch with representative.

I had to call in and talk to an agent to get my phone number. After that, I added my credit card to the payment methods and paid off the phone using the automated system.
Went to the chat and typed in Unlock device - the device in question was displayed. When I selected that, I got a message saying that the phone is already unlocked !
I thought we were supposed to wait for 60 days.

btw - I havent opened the box yet.

Perhaps all paid-off devices are automatically unlocked.
