Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

*** How to update Apple purchase date ***
From your Verizon online account, go to Account, Bill, Documents & receipts
Download the Customer Agreement PDF that has the service agreement and IMEI and barcodes
Go to https://checkcoverage.apple.com
Enter serial number
If it says no purchase date found, continue to create a case and request a call back
Upload the PDF
After the call back they said it could take up to 5 days for the date to be reflected
I checked the serial after 5 minutes and it was updated

My Customer Agreement doesn't have the IMEI or barcodes. So I contacted apple and shared my serial number with purchase details and was updated within 5 minutes. Now the waiting game starts.
There are two customer agreements in Verizon. One is a "Service Summary" which has barcodes ICCID and IMEI shown under "Device ID"

Folks - Can someone confirm the following for me? I'm on Verizon and added this as a new line.

Do I need to activate the phone before I cancelling the line?

I recieved the shipment notification and was able to pay off the phone via the automated line. I'm not getting the phone until Wednesday, Nov 20th. The phone was shipped last night Nov 17th.

You can contact them via chat to disconnect immediately and get the prorated payment for the monthly plan. Also, they waive off the activation fee if its 3 days or less.
Thank you! Yes, that was exactly what I did. I chatted with them and was able to get the lines disconnected immediately. This is done the same night I received the phones in the mail, so not sure if this is within 3 days. I read that the 3-day activation fee waiver starts when the phone was shipped, not you actually turn on the phone, so I may have to fight.

For billing purposes, activation starts with shipping; for unlocking purposes, activation starts with phone turning on. What a scam!

Well in that case, I do plan to fight, first with BBB and then the State Corporation Commision. Probably not going help anyone else but myself (maybe not even myself), but I am going to do it.

*** How to pay off with credit card ***
  • You need to establish a Verizon account
  • Go to Account, Bill, Payment methods
  • Add a credit card
  • If you have other Verizon lines, make sure you verify your Auto Pay is still pointing to the bank account
  • From a NON Verizon phone, call 800-837-4966
  • Enter the phone number for the line you want to pay off
  • Tell the robo attendant "pay off device"
  • Robo attendant will confirm the payoff amount ($299) and if you would like to process on credit card ending in xxxx (what you have on file)
  • * Say yes, and that's it.
*** How to update Apple purchase date ***
  • From your Verizon online account, go to Account, Bill, Documents & receipts
  • Download the Customer Agreement PDF that has the service agreement and IMEI (shown as Device ID), and barcodes
  • Go to https://checkcoverage.apple.com
  • Enter serial number
  • If it says no purchase date found, continue to create a case and request a call back
  • Upload the PDF
  • After the call back they said it could take up to 5 days for the date to be reflected
  • I checked the serial after 5 minutes and it was updated
*** Request early unlock (huge YMMV but worth a shot) ***
  • Login to your Verizon account
  • Start a chat
  • Ask them to submit a "request for early SIM unlock on your behalf"
  • For reason, simply say "device is paid in full"
  • Be ready for some pushback or if you want PUK unblock, or porting pin - just state the same
  • If they say it cannot be done, tell them politely that you are aware they cannot do it, and they need to send a request up the line
  • In my case they send to contact in 10 days (not holding my breath this will actually happen but worth a shot)
*** Disconnectiong line ***
  • Login to your Verizon account
  • Start a chat
  • Request an agent
  • If asked, about plans/service
  • Say disconnect line
  • They will try to offer you other options or to disconnect at a later date
  • Insist you need the line disconnected now
  • If asked for a reason, say you cannot give them one
  • Verify total under Account, Bill, Next bill estimate - about $7 for 3 days of service
*** Instant unlock using SIM Swap for ATT (YMMV) ***
  • After getting the phone and paying it off fully, make some calls/texts and make sure it shows up on ATT account
  • Transfer the eSIM to an unlocked, steps might vary depending on iPhone/android.
  • Make some calls with that phone and make sure it shows up on the account now.
  • Now go to ATT.com/device unlock and select non ATT customer and provide imei.
  • Make sure you reply yes to the confirmation email ATT sends
  • Only cancel the account after you are able to unlock.

i followed the directions to get to the section where all the documents were, for me, a new customer, i had 6 or 7 total. i just downloaded everything. then i followed the directions with apple as posted, and she was to see a couple documents, but weirdly she wanted to see my final pay off email with verizon and had me write in the serial number on that email(which i made a pdf off). it was a few hoops i was happy to do, took about 15minutes, and within about 10 minutes after this, everything was set correctly.

I purchased two phones with two new accounts. I see about 7 docs in one account but the other one doesn't have this doc with barcodes.

In for one from Verizon, but arrival is apparently not until 23rd… let's see what happens - hopefully comes sooner than later. Can someone confirm these details are correct?1) timer to cancel before 3 days starts once shipped. If you don't, you're in for a $35 activation fee2) line is activated once shipped, but phone is not - so for 60 day unlock, need to have phone in hand and turned on to begin phone unlock timer3) once line is activated, can setup Verizon account, and add payment method, then call 1-800-836-4966 to pay off device4) once phone is on, you can cancel the line. 5) Your total amount will be 299 + tax + prorated line charge (+ activation fee if not cancelled within 3 days of device being shipped)
Sounds correct to me. My phone will be arriving on 21st.
