Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

I ordered a ATT line, the phone still in transit and will arrive tomorrow. But today is the day 3. So if I wait to cancel the line until tomorrow, I will have to pay activation fee. I have already paid off the device by using ATT portal.

Given this scenario, what should I do now? If I cancel the line today to avoid activation fee, will I be able to unlock it any sooner or have to wait 60 days?

how did it go ?
I had already tried the ATT unlock process several times before I was able to successfully transfer the esim. The unlock site says I'll have to wait 24 hours to request again. Will report back. For H2O (ATT MVNO), had to sign up for a discounted month totaling about $11 to get the esim. The esim got on the new phone and activated just by reporting the new phone's IMEI and EID. No QR or manual steps needed. If this works, it will be better than waiting 60 day for Verizon or ATT. This process worked like a charm last year with the physical $1 H2O sims from Target/BB, as many on here can attest. Hoping for the same magic with the esim-only iPhone 14.

Yes, remembered last year's hassle too, but that was quite straightforward

Why are people cancelling lines before activating the phone? Doesn't this mean when you first turn on the phone it will not connect to Verizon and not be able to be automatically unlocked after 60 days? Unless someone can confirm deactivating the line does not affect activation and unlocking of phone, isn't it safer to just pay the $35 activation fee and wait to cancel the line after activating?

You can try doing the H2O as mentioned in the posts above if you cancel the line today but I don't know how well that will work, ATT unlock is also YMMV but for that you need to have an active account.

Agree. I was caught off guard by the lack of a physical sim tray, but hopefully the h2o swap works just as effectively in the esim world.

You are right in hindsight; at the time people did not know, only interested in avoiding activation fee.

Can anyone confirm whether or not we can cancel before receiving? I've ordered Verizon so waiting for 60 day unlock but not sure if I need to have phone turned on myself for it to actually work. Seen mixed messages here.

Also, ordered a 13 from the StraightTalk deal which is on the Verizon network from what I understand. Could I cancel this before receiving, then transfer that sim to activate this device too? (Thus triggering 60 days on both?)

So deactivating the line without turning on the phone with Verizon network..it won't unlock in 60days automatically...it will be locked forever... avoiding $35 will be a risk of unlock device

Ordered on 11/15 and as per Walmart status expected delivery date is 11/20. FedEx status showing waiting for the package to arrive from Walmart. Anyone else got this weird issue ?

This is what happened to me in a previous phone deal. I never opened the box to turn on the phone to activate. It remains locked to Verizon, and it cannot be unlocked since Verizon only recognizes it as a BYOD phone now.

These WM phones don't arrive sim-locked. They lock to the first service you activate it with. Take it out of the box and activate it with a sim from somewhere else. It will lock to that service but would be much more than a paperweight.

So I assume a new Verizon phone is taken out of the box and activated in T-Mobile esim ..you expect it will be unlocked automatically after 60days even if it's not activated at Verizon network at the very first start? Are you sure about this?
