Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

It seems that if you cancel before receiving the phone and turn it on with a different service (ATT, Tmobile, rather than the original Verizon), you can use the phone on the other service, but you still have to go back to Verizon for unlock. That is what I learned from this thread. Please correct me if I am wrong. So confused and scared now because I just received my phone today, 2 days after cancelling Verizon service. That's why I am waiting for you to report back on your H20 try.
Was able to get an AT&T unlock today. Cancelled verizon before receiving the phone. Used h20 esim to activate, transfered esim to unlocked phone, and then put in new phone IMEI in unlock portal. Works just like it did last year with physical sims. YMMV

I have two lines on Xfinity and I verified that both are working perfect on the new phone. I guess what reps say is not always true.
how did you transfer the esim of old phone to the 14?

Yes, they will update it at the next cycle.
So just wait for the email for the final bill and pay it off right?
How should i get to know the next cycle?

So far, going well for me. Here's a summary for others benefit

Nov 17:
Ordered Verizon iPhone

Nov 19:
Shipped and line activated

Nov 20:
- Called Verizon to get phone no and account info (did not write it down during Walmart order)
- Created account, linked phone, added credit card, paid off line per info in wiki
- Disconnected line by Live agent chat
- I cancelled on Day 2 after activation, hoping the activation fee will not be charged. Bill hasn't generated yet
- iPhone is in transit, will receive tomm

Nov 21 Plan:
- When I turn on the phone, it cannot activate since Verizon line is disconnected
- Will activate with T-Mobile eSIM (a flex policy iPhone can be activated on any US carrier)
- Most likely will not be able to unlock the phone. T-Mobile will ask me to deal with Verizon (I believe the IMEI will be tagged as a Verizon phone). Verizon will not unlock since I never activated the phone on Verizon. Still hoping T-Mobile will be able to unlock after a few months/ 1 year on their network
- I did not want to wait 60 days to use it on T-Mobile, that was my primary reason for skipping Verizon activation

I hope Fedex will deliver the phone without issue. If delivery is screwed up, I might be in trouble - Walmart is only liable for the $20 tax, not clear how I can get my money back from Verizon

My att phone yet to be shipped, but looks like line activated, I am thinking of doing the same else att will definitely charge me activation plus 60$ (they dont prorate).

Got AT&T phone in the mail today. Called to cancel service and pay off phone. They said the phone was activated on the date it shipped. I said that's impossible. I just got it today. After some wrangling and providing the Fedex tracking number I was able to get the activation fee waived (cancel within 3 days of activation). Was also able to get the phone paid off without much trouble.

The bad part, which I should have been able to figure out beforehand, is that ATT refuses to prorate cancellations. Somehow the A-holes started my service plan on the 14th (ship date) billed me for the 14th-15th of November and then a full month from November 15th to December 15th, the next billing period. They have so far refused to prorate any amount or adjust the bill based on the date of the phone's receipt. To add insult to injury, I somehow ended up on a $100/month plan. Not sure how that happened. Will be in this phone for a fair amount more than expected.

I ordered 2 Verizon phones. Carrier unlock was a no-go on my first phone which I ended up disconnecting line and will wait 60 days. For the second one, I activated it, paid off and then chatted with an agent. Told the agent that I needed to use my non-verizon work line on this personal phone during upcoming work travel. After some convincing, the agent mentioned that he submitted a request to their backend team and asked to wait 4-5 days for unlock. Planning to hold off on disconnecting for a few days to see if unlock works. Let's see.

I paid off my phone and I disconnected my line thru chat.. It said it would be disconnected after 1 month.. When I chatted with agent, he said I wouldn't be charged from the day I disconnected even though line is active.. Is that true or should I try to get it cancelled right away? anyone with this experience?

Was your phone shipped or did you buy in the store ?

At what stage did you pay off the $299 cost of the phone ?

Probably need to specify ATT or Verizon. Probably not true for ATT.
