Looks like the memory is soldered on, can't upgrade it. I tried checking Crucial's website but they said it's not upgradable.

Picked this one up today. Just some brief thoughts.

The fit/finish despite being plastic is surprisingly pretty alright. I actually like it. Touchpad is functional, pretty clicky but of course not glass given this price point. Just keep in mind it's a bit smaller than say a Macbook's and positioned to the left. Keyboard quite possibly better than that of any sub-$500 notebook I've come across ever from other brands. Display is what you'd expect. A bit on the meh side. Nothing too special. But useable.

The one reason I'm debating returning it is the fan noise. This is purely a software issue and IMO not a reflection of heating issues. The 7730u is supposed to be a 15w TDP CPU, but Lenovo for some reason has the fans set to turn on constantly even if you're doing really light duty stuff like web browsing. I'm positive Lenovo could just set the fans to start kicking on once temps across the board hit 60c or more. But naw, even at 10% cpu usage, fans kick on.

Real shame too. Everything else about this laptop is great in my book for not even $500, but the damn fan curve sucks.

Can't you set the fan in the bios or a program?

Nope. The performance/balanced/power saving feature you can access from Vantage doesn't. Help a ton. Sure if the laptop is sitting there doing nothing, fans turn off. But just even opening up Chrome and a page right after causes the fans to fire up.

Checked BIOS too, looks really stripped down. Didn't see a fan control setting. Lenovo probably went with the cheapest possible motherboard available, which means it's barebones.

Did they ever fix the weak hinge problem? Just fixed my daughter's i5 ideapad for the fourth or fifth time last week and whenever I see these "deals" come up for cheap Lenovo laptops, I remember all of the time, money, and effort I have had to put into replacing the hinges, the top cover, and even the lower cover whenever the hinges lock up and the mounting points break. Never again.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I just picked this one up for my mother-in-law. I don't think the fan noise will bother her too much, but better to know now so I can warn her. I'm keeping it boxed-up for now in case of a better deal coming along for BF.

Thanks for the feedback. Deal is still ongoing, may be worth getting a second one to make sure you didn't get a lemon?

eBay has similar prices for this laptop. Better to wait for Black Friday deals

I have 2 HP's here and both have hinge issues as well. Terrible plastic garbage!
