Yeah, I snagged this one. There's still a price difference - 32GB RAM (~$70 min), 1TB SSD (~$50), and a Win 11 license (~$30 if you trust a keyshop). But there are other factors to consider:

The 8745H is a much faster CPU than the 6800H on the $204 one. Passmark places it single-threaded at 3758 vs 3244 and multithreaded at 29351 vs 23408.
The smaller process node means less heat generation, so it's going to be able to boost more/longer.
The UM680S is 4800MT/s RAM, while this UM870S is 5600MT/s. I'm not sure it that's a CPU limitation or just what's bundled.

That said, if you already have RAM/SSDs, that barebone is a steal.

The 780M isn't really that much better than 680M to justify paying $447 for this barebones model over $204 for the older barebones model. If it were 880M or better yet 890M then perhaps.

**edit** I'm presuming here that this model is barebones like the title suggests but looking at the page I don't think it is. This would make it a much better deal than suggested.

Ryzen 6000 series and the rebranded 7300 Series based on Zen 3+, only support memory speed up to 4800 MT/s.

Ah, wasn't sure. I knew the mobile chips don't support EXPO, but I wasn't sure if it supported a manual memory overclock. Ryzen 9000 desktop officially supports 5600MT/s, but a lot of X870 motherboards support 8000MT/s or higher.

you are 100% correct.

more info
the 8745h specs ar identical to the 7840h.
and the 8845 is identical to 7940 specs with the key issues from 7000 to 8000 is the 8's are using 18% less power. whether that translates to OC ability or undervolting ability hard to tell.
I have a 7940hs in a Asus flow x13 and its incredible. I also have a 8845 in a Gmktec
minipc .

Amd had alot of 7840's out there. This time around it seems that 8845 are in high number. The 8745's should be comperable just havent seen alot of them out there.

Been seeing these pop up lately and curious about their gaming capabilities. I have a PS5 for the usual but looking at cheap steam games that aren't graphic heavy. Would this fit the bill? Could I play Portal on it as a benchmark of its ability

You're probably being facetious (I don't want to assume because sometimes questions like this are purely innocent), but it's technically possible, although the card of course will not fit inside.

You can use an M2 to pcie adapter. You'd also need an external PSU for the GPU. A GPU case would be best but isn't strictly necessary.

What's best though is to buy this and then buy a larger case, a motherboard, a CPU, RAM, SSD, PSU, the GPU, and whatever other parts you need for an actual build for the 4090. 😉 Or, you can skip this and just buy all that. Or, invest your money.

Yea, would be nice to see the higher models as bare bones with substantial duscounts, $90 less wont cut it...
