Let me combine ratings from both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes to create a comprehensive top 20 list. However, since I don't have access to current databases and need to be transparent about potential inaccuracies, I should note that you may want to verify these scores directly.

Here's the combined top 20, with both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes (RT) scores:

1. Casablanca (1942)
- IMDb: 8.5/10
- RT: 99%

2. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
- IMDb: 8.2/10
- RT: 100%

3. The Maltese Falcon (1941)
- IMDb: 8.0/10
- RT: 100%

4. In a Lonely Place (1950)
- IMDb: 7.8/10
- RT: 98%

5. The Big Sleep (1946)
- IMDb: 7.9/10
- RT: 97%

6. The African Queen (1951)
- IMDb: 7.7/10
- RT: 98%

7. To Have and Have Not (1944)
- IMDb: 7.8/10
- RT: 97%

8. They Drive by Night (1940)
- IMDb: 7.3/10
- RT: 96%

9. High Sierra (1941)
- IMDb: 7.3/10
- RT: 95%

10. Key Largo (1948)
- IMDb: 7.6/10
- RT: 93%

11. Dark Passage (1947)
- IMDb: 7.5/10
- RT: 91%

12. Sabrina (1954)
- IMDb: 7.4/10
- RT: 93%

13. Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
- IMDb: 7.3/10
- RT: 94%

14. The Caine Mutiny (1954)
- IMDb: 7.2/10
- RT: 92%

15. Dead End (1937)
- IMDb: 7.3/10
- RT: 90%

16. We're No Angels (1955)
- IMDb: 7.2/10
- RT: 89%

17. The Roaring Twenties (1939)
- IMDb: 7.3/10
- RT: 89%

18. The Harder They Fall (1956)
- IMDb: 7.1/10
- RT: 90%

19. All Through the Night (1942)
- IMDb: 7.0/10
- RT: 88%

20. The Petrified Forest (1936)
- IMDb: 7.1/10
- RT: 88%

This combined ranking takes into account both the IMDb user ratings and Rotten Tomatoes critic scores. Some films might rank higher or lower depending on which metric you prioritize. It's worth noting that older films sometimes have different rating patterns compared to modern ones, and scores can change over time.

Would you like me to highlight any particular aspects of these films or provide more details about any specific ones?

Dumb question, but Is Treasure of the Sierra Madre where Fallout New Vegas got its inspiration for the DLC Dead Money?

So many good Bogey films here. It is hard to choose which 5 to go with, but you should start with these:
Casablanca
Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep
Kid Galahad
Key Largo
Bullets or Ballots
Dark Victory
Petrified Forest

Other worthy mentions are:
Conflict
The Treasure of Sierra Madre
The Roaring Twenties
They Drive by Night
Marked Woman

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the films above - especially ones that also feature Betty Davis (arguably one of the greatest actresses that has ever lived), Edward G Robinson or James Cagney.

I love modern film, but there is less and less quality coming out of Hollywood. These old classics may not have the special effects, but their quality is timeless.

Just watched Casablanca a week ago. It's genuinely a great movie. Guess I'm late to the party.

This is totally subjective of course but in my personal opinion Casablanca is probably the best movie of all time. Great characters, memorable dialogue, romance, suspense, badass reluctant hero, luminous leading lady, and personal sacrifice, set against the backdrop of war. Perfect.

I watched it and then watched it with Roger Ebert commentary. He agrees with you. Last time i rewatched movies again back to back was Inglorious Basterds and before that Crash.

Fun fact Bogarts famous line "here's to looking at you, kid" didn't originally have the word kid in the line, he ad-libbed that last minute.

And yes it's my favorite movie for all the reasons you listed.

That's my question. The list only contains *two* 4K titles, which breaks the deal for me. I wonder if there's a way it know if we'd get the iTunes resolution upgrade for the others.

I'm only seeing about half the movies listed in OP. No African Queen, e.g.
