What does one need in addition to this? My son is the guitar geek and wants to be a sound tech. He has a computer and guitars and pedals, etc. But how does this work exactly? I would like to get it but want to make sure he can use it.

ruskibug .. so it goes like this:

First, you get a computer. Windows work. Mac works. I don't really know about the rest of them.

Then, you get a thing called "a guitar interface". These have come down massively in price. You could acquire one for about $59 for the cheapest. But my advice is to go with a Focusrite Scarlett. It's usually about $119. The reason this is important is because when you hit the strings on the guitar, you want it to be just like an amplifier. You want the sound to come out of the speakers instantly instead of a delay in making the sound while the computer does it's thing. That's the difference between a good interface and a cheap interface. Well, that and the fidelity. So, a guitar interface.

Then, you will need a computer program called a "DAW" .. or .. a Digital Audio Workshop. You can get free ones. I once paid $3,000 for one and it didn't seem to be a heck of a lot better than the one I paid $39 for .. which is a program called "Reaper".

So .. you have a computer ... you have a device called a guitar interface .. and then you have a DAW program running on that computer. The DAW program will ask you when you make a new track in it, "Yo, dude ... how ya wanna make a racket? What are you .. What are you some kind of GEEK WIZARD and play synthesizer or .... what are you .., you an alcoholic and play Roland Drums or .. how you wanna make a racket, holmes?" And you should have a little box there to select your guitar interface.

BOING

Now you can hear the sound of the guitar playing.

When you hit the "FX" button on that track .. THERE YA GO. Usually a DAW will come with some default effects.

This program here will give you the effects it describes.

UAD is known, generally, as a hardware producer .. as in superior .. very, very elegant ... guitar interfaces (and it's not just guitar, you'll need an interface for microphone or digeridoos or whatever instrument you choose .. microphones cover most of that) .. UAD's guitar interface, if I recall correctly, are usually up around $399 .. and then they really go up from there. They make some really high end stuff.

So, this software would interface with a computer program, known as a DAW, and when selected give you those effects.

I own this software package (and paid more than double it is on sale for here) .. and I consider it .. "ahhh, OK. Pretty Good." It's above average, for sure.

But once you get to where you can manipulate effects for your guitar with this interface and DAW system I explained .. there's really no need for effect pedals anymore. People will argue you about that because .. some people are like that. But the fact is, every guitar pedal has a little processor in it.

Your computer has a great big processor in it.

Get you a Line 6 FBV Express MK II and then have it use MIDI to communicate with your DAW

.. and ..

.. that's the end of the road.

Now, with the FBV, you have a series of foot pedal switches .. with a Wah or Volume rocker ... that you control with your feet .. just like a guitar pedal. And you just select whichever pedal you want to control with your feet in your DAW.

You can program an entire pedalboard .. thousands and thousands of dollars of guitar pedals ... for free. Well, it's not free .. but .. you don't have to buy anymore guitar pedals for the rest of your life.

It's done with the computer.

And, as I said, they'll be people who tell you this, that and another thing but .. I've been playing guitar for money for 46 years .. I've played on tours that crossed oceans and everything I just said to you is the absolute honest truth. Trust me, it saddens me, personally, when I look over at my shelves and shelves and shelves of guitar pedals I have gathered through the years .. thousands and thousands of dollars I have spent ..

.. and all of it ..

Are old technology, archaic, a thing of the past.

What I explained to you here, and what they are selling in this Slickdeal ..

.. that's the new way of doing things.

Hope this helped you to understand this new way.

I own these and they are great for VST synths (though this is marketed as a guitar efx bundle). Quality efx that are useful and simple to use = they are used often.

I don't think UAD software can work unless you also have recording software as well. Could be wrong.

Just wanted to mention that some junior or community colleges offer courses on electronic music, recording, and production. I took a class and then used my college discount to buy Pro Tools Perpetual. (about $200 I think) There are some pretty good free software options too. Pro Tools is the industry standard though.

Yeah, this sounds like a good offer but some plug-ins can be proprietary. I'll have to look this up.

Edit: nope. According to what I read, it has the proprietary versions for their hardware but the universal (vst I suppose) versions as well.

This is amazingly helpful. He has a Scarlett interface already. He is looking at colleges now for sound tech programs. He is self taught and is really bright. The price is right so even if he just plays with it for a short while I'm sure he will have fun or learn something. Thanks for taking time to make a real reply for this mama.

The producers bundle is $80 but has most of these same items plus some extra items and keyboards also.

Happy to help. Good luck to the boy.

If my experience in this field can proffer any meaningful advice, I would say this to him:

Learn A.I.

Learn everything you can about AI Music Generation, Manipulation & Composition

He's coming at JUST the right time to be on the ground floor of this new technology in music.

The Scarlett interface most likely came with an Ableton Live Lite DAW with a bunch of similar plugins. Their website says it also comes with a 3-mo trial of Pro Toos Artist and a 6-mo trial of FL Studio Producer Edition, so he can experiment with other DAWs as well. This UAD bundle probably isn't needed until he learns how to use similar free ones he already has.

I heard of you, I heard you were dead.

You can join my retro-synth club. I didn't buy this, it just dragged me into buying some vintage compressors for my prophet bass from them…

I have an AKAI MPC Mini but didn't use it much and got overwhelmed by the AKAI software/"Beat making" focus. Would you recommend this bundle for $80 over the guitar-focused one as someone getting into guitar who just likes to dink around? Cheers

I don't think $1,244 is the real retail price for this bundle. I checked on the UAD website and the retail price for this bundle is actually $299.
https://www.uaudio.com/uad-plugin...undle.html
I was confused when I looked at the Guitar Center website and saw much better UAD bundles there that had a much lower retail price. I see that Sweetwater and Plugin Boutique also advertises this bundle's retail price as $1,244. I'm assuming that's if you add up each individual plugin's retail price. But they don't do that for the other better UAD bundles on those sites. Anyway, I don't think this should really be considered 96% off.
Also of note: You can get this same UAD Guitar FX bundle for $49 (on sale) on the other sites as well --UAD's website, Sweetwater and Plugin Boutique.

depends on if you want the keys or not. Course, there's a lot of freebie keys out there but not all of them are equal. I just noticed a lot of the same plugs were in the producer's bundle also. Check out the list. $30 more is not a lot if you think you would use at least 1 of these extra plugs. It's practically like getting the rest for free.

If you want to go for broke on guitar only plugs from hell, there's always Guitar Rig. It's on sale for $100. I have a couple guitars but I'm not a guitarist. An earlier version I used before though. Pretty neat.

Check out Plugin Discounts. I was hunting around for some other UA Deals and they had the best price. Worked fine.
