I've been thinking about getting a good tuner, I was looking at the Boss one, but does it really make that much of difference than using a $10 rowin digital tuner?
Depends on what you're looking for. Kicking around at home or playing a loud drowned out show with a full band? Probably not. Recording or solo accompaniment? Maybe so

I am able to tune each of the strings with a tuner. I then confirm it by plucking an open string and getting an overtone at the twelfth fret. But when I play a note at the first fret, it is not in tune. Is must be due to the string stretching due to the distance from the string to the fret and the height of the nut.

It does this with my electric and acoustic guitars. Is this normal and something you have to live with? Do I need better guitars? I have played a wind instrument for many years and my ear is quite sensitive to pitch.

It's hard to diagnose what you're explaining from that little bit of text, but fret height and intonation will both play a role in not accuracy at each fret. If you're on a lower quality instrument, fret dressing can be helpful to level things out up the finger board.

If it's only the first fret that is really causing issues, it could also be the depth of the nut slots.

Yep, dead quickly. By the way, 'Gear Tree' it's own thing, but if you see 'Gear Nuts' that's Sweetwater's Amazon/Reverb alias. So you get the candy, but Amazon's more friendly return policy.
