before buying, check the SD thread or with your local utilities company - i got a nest thermostat from my electric company for $49. a bunch of utility companies in many states can provide free or highly discounted learning thermostats
I own the 3rd gen and I have not had any issues and the build is solid, however, it's a 9-year old design. I feel the $139 price tag is a bit too high. In addition, if you are concerned about future compatibility, the 4th gen has a new Matter integration which is the new standard on smart home device integration with other Matter technology (Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant, and others). If you do not want to be left out when Matter becomes common, then you might want to wait.
If you can get the gen 3 for a lower price until gen 4 price comes down as well as for the Matter technology to mature, then I would hold off on the 3rd gen purchase until a better deal comes around.

FYI unless you go straight to the latest model (Nest Thermostat 4th gen), this is strictly better than anything in between. For one, this one supports temperature sensors.

I have a Gen 1. Worth upgrading?

So this device is about 5 years old at this point. Mine would constantly shut itself off in the winter. Definitely could have been an issue with the furnace, but I replaced the battery in it and the problem mostly went away. At this point I'm really tempted to buy a new one... But at the same time it's 5 years old! I'm thinking I should wait for the new gen to go on sale.

Maybe not. It's a thermostat, before the smart ones people probably only buy a new one when the old one is broken.

Wish I could go back in time and ditch this stupid thermostat in favor of the one that comes with original equipment.

Some have conditions, like you have to be permanently signed up for their power saving program here in Vegas where they can raise or lower your AC without you being able to change it during peak hours if the grid is starting to get overloaded.

that's probably true, but in my case and I suspect many others, it's literally just buy it for cheap without conditions.

if you're an SDer, you know to check the fine print. it may not help everyone, but the SD list has a lot of states and utility companies

Have had mine since released years ago and still working and works with the Nest App. Hopefully it keeps on kicking.
