I admit that I did type the EMEI into the Total Wireless webpage because the TW URL is on top of the page before thinking about it. That may or may not have caused the phone "belongs to another brand" issue. I typed the EMEI into the ST webpage and got the same message you did.
I reached out to ST online customer support via chat, who set up a new ST account for me using the physical SIM that came with the phone. the rep tried to sell me additional minutes/time but I politely declined and wasn't pushed. The rep did suggest that I should open the box, turn on the phone, and send a text to 611611 to confirm the service was working.. which I did because I do plan to keep the phone.
Unlock date is January 15th 2025. I plan to move it over to my Visible account as soon as it unlocks.

BUT… there is a picture of a green Straight Talk box… which could be inferred to mean new open box, not in original OEM packaging.
