Beat me to the post. Had to buy it as I'm not sure it'll go any lower. And tried to price match at Target but they refused

Thinking of getting one of these for my 10 year old with cellular data as a stand alone watch with no phone. Anyone know how good the battery life would be?

Doing the same thing as the Gizmo doesn't get great reviews. I'm not terribly concerned about battery life s we'll charge it each night. Hopefully it doesn't get destroyed!

Same here for my kid who can't text friends as they no longer have gizmos. Will be going with the us mobile watch plan for $78/year. Only down side is Spotify app I hear doesn't work on a standalone watch setup through Apple family

Interesting / frustrating, re: Spotify...I'll have to look into that because that was a big selling point for the kid.

Yeah I looked hard about it. Lots of Spotify forum posts about it and all seemed dead ends

I believe Verizon will sell you this watch and a 3 year cellular plan for $335 after activation fee (or am I reading this wrong)?

If I'm reading it right, wouldn't the Verizon deal be better, assuming you plan to use the watch for 2 years or more?

Where do you see that deal? The link just takes me to the product page for the apple watch but I don't see how to get it with a 3 year plan.

ETA: It looks like you can buy it via monthly payments for 36 months, but that doesn't include the mobile plan which is another $15 a month for me.

Any idea which iOS version this ships with? My daughter recently bought a refurbished Apple Watch 4, but she can't pair it with her iPhone 8 because the watch uses an OS that is only compatible with iPhone 10 or newer.

I just did this same thing. We just charge it each night and seems to be fine but he doesn't bring it to school and uses it pretty lightly. Just last night he was saying the battery was going down quickly but I haven't had a chance to really investigate.

The only real issue is that he can't seem to view websites on it. It doesn't load them. I haven't had a chance to fully troubleshoot why other than to see this is a problem others have with an Apple Watch.

All in all it's achieving what we wanted though. It gives him a way to comm with us and friends but not full access to the internet and social media.

We had a spare iPad that I set it up with that has a keyboard attachment and that is nice for him to use to text his friends at home. Otherwise he uses the speech to text.

Here are two articles I found very helpful:

https://www.betterroaming.com/wat...ed-states/

https://web.truphone.com/us/about...ple-watch/

Good luck!

We have done this with 2 of your kids now, it's a great stepping stone.

Battery lasts about a day, unless they go into airplane mode, but even then it's a challenge.

Don't know anything about Spotify, but Amazon Music app works fine. Though music streaming does drain the battery obviously.

Downtime works too.

Thanks OP. Just picked up 2. We're also planning to use a way to give phone access to our kids without giving them a smartphone
https://www.mymoneyblog.com/apple...eview.html

Unfortunately we don't have an iPhone to set it up, so will likely buy a used one off eBay unless anyone has any suggestions otherwise

In the link above, he uses "betterroaming" for standalone cell service at $100/yr. Anyone know of any cheaper options?

I would look at the refurbished one that just popped up on woot if you are buying for a kid. 2 year warranty and 1/3 the price.

Here's some links to the issue:

https://community.spotify.com/t5/...-p/6156669

"but at the moment Spotify doesn't have a standalone Apple Watch app and in order for each user to be able to listen to Spotify on their watch, they need to have an iPhone paired with it first"

Another thread https://discussions.apple.com/thr...ortBy=rank

Seems to be Spotify is just being lazy and not wanting to fix the issue seeing as Apple Music apparently works on a kids standalone watch
