From the iphone 14 thread, looks like ATT will unlock faster. Because you can activate the phone, transfer the esim to another unlocked iphone, and then request unlock, basically similar to the physical sim swap trick. You'll likely have to pay the activation fee + prorated usage time because of shipping time + wait for unlock request to be resolved.
But how soon will we receive the Walmart gift card?

Even if the phone is still in installments?

Waiting to see if this will end up being device payments on Verizon rather than bill credits. If it does end up being DPP, this will be an epic deal.

If you buy in person it's basically instant.

Can we use the gift card to pay off the phone?

So the iPhone 13 pro that had come out in 2021 gets the full $1000 credit, while the newer flagship S22 Ultra is bundled with the worthless pixel 7 in the $700 tier?

Clowns.

I did this two years ago. I already have AT&T, so I bought an iPhone 14 in-store and got a gift card within 24 hours. I don't remember how long exactly, but it wasn't long. I logged into my AT&T account and paid off the phone. There weren't any credits involved. I then went back to Walmart about two days later and did another upgrade and used that gift card to pay for the next phone, and then eventually just used the second gift card on other gifts. Pretty painless overall.

Is it not possible to purchase say the Verizon iPhone 16 in store, activate it on one of their $75 plans, get the $300 gift card (within 24 hours it says) ... and then cancel service (and pay prorated for first month)? You wouldn't get the bill credits but you'd essentially get a new iPhone 16 for $300 off or am I missing something? All Verizon phones are automatically unlocked after 60 days from activation.
I think its the same deal as last year. You call verizon to paid off the plan once you get the giftcard.

I always buy my iPhone from Walmart's Black Friday deals. Since 2014, I will pay the full amount and leave a $1 balance for the device payment. Then, I go to the service provider to pay the remaining balance on the same day and cancel the service. So far, they have reversed all the charges, and the device gets unlocked. I don't like locked phones at all.
So buy the phone with a payment plan of whatever value, pay it off later that day, and then cancel service? And the GC will still get sent and the phone automatically unlocks?
is it better to do this in store or online is okay too?

Can additional money be put down on the device when checking out online? How about in store?
For example, I want to trade in my current phone and on AT&T that means bill credits over 36 months (as long as the new device is not paid off early). So for easy math, say $10/month bill credit over 36 months = $360. If the device cost $700, can I pay $700 - $360 = $340 at checkout in order to reduce my monthly payment?
