How does this compare to something like the Fluance RT81?
I have the RT81, but if I'm shopping for one today I would probably buy this one instead of the RT81. I do like it very much but at $114 for this one is a very good value. If you're paying $250 for the RT81 then most would recommend adding a little more and going for the RT82, due to more upgrade options.
I'm looking to get into an RT85 in the next month. I want a "buy once", half-decent turntable out-of-the-box that doesn't need another $400 in upgrades to feel premium, and doesn't add a bunch of complexity down the road. I have a lot of high end equipment, but will likely be a casual vinyl enjoyer. Does the Monolith compare well, to the point I wouldn't get an upgrade itch within a year of purchasing? I only care about sound quality and build quality. No built-in pre-amp needed. An auto-stop would be nice.

wow! that's a great deal! still kicking myself for not getting the open-box from parts-express for $100, but for $14 more to be *new*... wow! Would have preferred the black vs. wood-grain color, but beggars can't be choosers -- phenomenal deal. TU & Rep'd
This is a really good deal. Only thing holding me back is it doesn't have auto stop or auto return.
Wow really? My lowfi console stereo (remember those) from the early 80's did that.
Excuse my ignorance but what happens when it gets to the end of the record? It just keep spinning and wearing out the cartridge until you lift the arm?

Yeah I've left mine spinning overnight before. Not this model but another high end one that also lacks it. Doesn't seem that bad for it when that happens though.
You can buy tonearm lifters for $25-$300 for this type of turntable.
But if you don't plan to be around to lift the tonearm yourself, you're using the wrong music media anyway. This isn't the 70s where your only other option was 8-track which itself had an analogous problem.
Yeah, I've been looking at this deal but I'd like an auto return model for cheap if possible. I currently have a Technics direct drive turntable with auto return from the late 80's that's still going strong.

My understanding is those things are built like a tank... likely to outlive all of us
