Don't let this confuse you with an actual NAS

To clarify slightly further. Yes this is a DAS not a NAS. Adds storage to a PC, not to your network. Cheaper because it doesn't have the brains to run itself, it needs your computer.

Possibly a dumb question, but could I attach this to my Synology 923+ and have that be its brain?

I would spend the extra money and get something like this for a proper DAS.

We need a company to make one with a oculink or USB 4 port so that you could connect it with a mini PC that would be the ultimate low power NAS solution that you could easily upgrade by just getting a new mini PC.

I have one hooked up to my QNAP NAS. Once you have it set up via its dipswitches, it should just be seen as an external drive by whatever you plug it into.

I bought mine for $150 several years ago from B&H, and it works great...as long as you go in knowing that it's not a NAS. It's a DAS. You can't expand the storage or add drives to an array or anything like that. Once you have the drives in and the drive mode set via the dipswitches, that's it. If that's all you need - a direct attached storage box - it does the job really well.

Just to be clear- it will appear as a separate drive when connected to your existing NAS. It won't merge with the pool. It will just be a very big external USB drive.

Your link has no hardware RAID, so unless going JBOD, apples to oranges comparison.

How does this compare with the orico(https://slickdeals.net/f/17903217-orico-4-bay-external-hard-drive-docking-station-usb-3-2-gen-1-to-sata-i-ii-iii-for-2-5-3-5-hdd-ssd-w-hard-drive-duplicator-cloner-function-63-free-shipping) one from yesterday? Is the difference the build quality, coverage, cooling, speeds?

What you're asking for already exists.

There are plenty of DAS enclosures already on the market that interface via USB 3.2 Gen 2 or even Gen 2x2 (10Gbit and 20Gbit, respectively).

The QNAP you linked to is capped at 16Gbps by the bus and requires the open PCIe lanes to accommodate it, which isn't always easy to come by on these mini PCs. Most can't even physically house the card.

Prior to USB 3.2, SAS would have definitely been the only way to go, though.

Yes this unit relies on software raid.

Does this auto power on after power loss? Do drive bays go to sleep on inactivity?

I actually really like the concept of a USB-C DAS with about 4 drives each, attaching 3 of them to a Mini PC running Linux to build a ZFS storage array. Pre-built NASes don't come with powerful enough of a CPU to consolidate my virtualization homelab.

Unfortunately in practice one of the above issues (either auto sleep disconnects or failing to power on without manually pressing a button) tends to be an issue with most of these DASes.
