I did it in the past, few years ago.
And later you can you permanent unlock.
I don't remember when permanent unlock become available exactly, 6+ months probably, but I might be wrong...

T-Mobile unlock requires being active for 40 days ... and device paid off, which won't happen for 24 months if you want the full $800 credit.. can't pay off early either.
The guys were really helpful, they have tried the promo code from T-Life, but it said explicitly: "Online orders only".
They code is visible when you are ready to submit the order.

Specifically, you have to be on TMO network to make it work, no way to do it when you are overseas already...
At least, that's how it was in the past.

Costco and Sam's Club don't accept trade-Ins in stores. I've always went to a T-Mobile corporate owned store in the area and turned in my trade-in phone. It was a pretty straightforward process.
A Costco gift card or tmobile?
Even if you buy online from T-Mobile you can trade in store? Do you get their evaluation on the spot?

That is no more at least for me as they said policy has been changed and they aren't unlocking but instead offered free roaming plan which worked . This was like in August 2024. If you have plans to add esim that might be not possible .
Yes, even if you buy the phone online. And yes they will look at the phone for damage/ water damage etc and tell you if it'll be accepted as a trade-in or not right away. Only the T-Mobile Corporate Stores accept trade-ins in store.

If you've been T-Mobile customer for a long time and if you call and get a good rep on the phone. They'll permanently unlock it for you if you tell them you are traveling internationally and want to use the local sim or eSIM there. I've had multiple phones permanently unlocked by T-Mobile in the past.
Definitely works on ONE plan. You can go through the process online or their app to be sure.
