Believe me, if someone wants to spy using hardware backdoors... They would be doing it on enterprise grade machines. Not enough monetary benefits on these consumer grade devices. That's why all 3 lettered agencies are partnered with Google search n assistant...much easier to backdoor from s/w
Yes you can, and you'd be locked into the 16GB and 256GB storage for the life of the device, and that may be okay for you.
Run circles in what? Synthetic benchmarks? I am pretty sure that for what most people use this type of machines for, you would never notice a difference. Plus if people want to do some light gaming I am pretty sure this machine would run circles around any Mac since many games simply don't exist on a Mac. Don't get me wrong, if you are in Apple ecosystem and don't plan to do any gaming on it the Mac mini is likely a much better option (although probably 100$ more for less RAM and storage in the end) but people have different use cases in mind and Mac mini isn't the right answer for everyone, likely not for most people actually.

What possible gaming could you do on this machine?

I rather pay another $200 and get
a m4 apple mini that will run circles around this UM870.
At $500, the UM870 would have 32GB/2TB. The Mac Mini would have 16GB/256GB. Also gaming on a Mac is extremely limited; you're missing out on 90% of games out there.
Wait.. I thought the SSD in the M4 Minis was user upgradable??
The M4 Mini has a proprietary NAND storage module that is missing the controller, which is onboard the Mini's motherboard. It's not like a consumer SSD which has the controller and NAND storage on the same PCB.
You're GPU limited; this CPU still has a 30k PassMark score, which is the same as the 8700G.
I mean, I realize the GPU isn't a 4090 or anything, I just want the small footprint of a mini PC with the power of a 780m built-in graphics... but I wasn't sure which would be best:
Ryzen 7 8745H 8C/16T + 780M
or
8700G + 780M
Both have it built in. Both are limited to 5600 MHz on the ram... is it 6's? Google says the 8700G is 12% faster, but, at 34% more energy cost. It's also $255 for the 8700G all by itself, whereas this has a motherboard and chassis included.
I'm so conflicted. Is there anything even faster than a 780M in this footprint? Probably not anywhere near the pricepoint, right?

8700G uses DDR5. It will be better for CPU than 7850HS/8845HS since it has access to faster RAM ~DDR5 6000.
Note that 8745H lacks the NPU.
880M and 890M are faster, but you'll pay twice as much.
