Had 3 of these at work. One finally died after 4 years of moderage usage. Banding and streaks. Changing toner didn't help. Also had to change the ADF rollers on 2 of them. The rod holding the rubber rollers has a metal pin on one side but plastic holidng up the other side. So if somebody jams it hard enough (stapled paper?) it breaks. It's an $80 part.

We still replaced it with the same printer because we do a lot of scan to email and you can set up to 4 people with preset settings on the relatively large display. HP displays are still so tiny. Toner is expensive. Never tried generic on these.
Pre-Covid, I bought the predecessor to this (743 or 733?) for about $200 on an Office Depot clearance (found here on SD). Basically same unit but mine also has fax. Like you my color needs are nominal so I print the vast majority of my stuff on an old HP monochrome laser which I keep next to the color printer. This keeps the cost per page way down relative to color laser cartridges which are notoriously expensive. The old monochrome laser takes 3rd party toner unlike the newer printers from HP, Canon, etc. for which the mfrs have created firmware that won't let you print unless it's their cartridges. Google this for insight on the class action lawsuits and governmental actions against HP.

My Canon has been bulletproof, admittedly low usage. Didn't think I'd use single pass scanning but that has been a nice benefit. And while this doesn't appear to have faxing, that feature really helped during Covid when USG groups would not accept e-mailed forms (yes you SSA!) and I was forced to submit via fax.

For prospective buyers, be aware of the space requirements and weight. It consumes a lot of space. Mine is situated on a file cabinet. Might be hard to place on a desk. As soon as you pick this baby up, you'll see this isn't your light inkjet. For some users, these might be deal killers but once in place, I think those with moderate needs will be happy.

Another poster asked about Brother color lasers. I know that the company is very well loved because there are plenty of third party toners that work with their monochromatic lasers. Would love to hear from others whether the same is true for colors too.

If you plan to print a lot, this machine, like virtually all others will eat you up in OEM color toner costs. Last I checked, the toner costs of a color laser exceeded the price of the printer. Also, some/many/most of these color lasers come with cartridges that are "starter" versions with limited output.
Important to note that after you click the activate link for the offer on the product page, there is a second activate button to click in the popup.

Man that's a good deal. I have a black and white laser printer after getting so annoyed with how long inkjets last, when I don't print very often, but sometimes I miss printing in color. I mostly just print documents so I couldn't justify the significantly higher cost of a color laser printer. Might have to jump on this one.

This is a good deal but I rarely shop at Staples. Is there anything there that is worth to buy the reward points or can I redeem the points for gift card?

Nice find, tempted but what are some good suggestions to use Staples's points for? Also, how long does it take for points to post after purchase?

Term says:

To be eligible for the offer, member must activate offer in their Easy Rewards dashboard on staples.com or Staples mobile app and provide membership number at checkout.

I have joined the easy reward and able to activate the 50% back in pts. However, I am unable to find a place to enter the membership number in the checkout screen. Is that applied automatically or is there a field I missed (for instance, need to put that into the PO field)?

Just to clarify.... 50% back in points is $190 worth to spend at Staples? I haven't used their points program before and the T&C isn't too clear.

TIA

If you have the space for another laser printer Canon makes a stand-alone Canon imageCLASS LBP632Cdw.

Amazon says black friday deal of $180 but sometimes they go as low as $150 or $125.
I use it at home and I don't print color that often so it's a perfect senario for me.

I tried generic toner on this. Only black did well. Color wasn't good. Machine is making screeching sounds when printing.
Thinking of ordering official ink but it's really expensive, as much as machine if not more for high yield ones.

Oh crud - I have the banding and streaks that cleaning won't solve and I hate to waste money on a toner cartridge if that won't solve the problem Frown

As for using Staples points, my best finds are batteries as previously mentioned, office chairs (when on sale), Nintendo Switch hardware and games and Lego (not a great selection but you might find something you like).

There was a cleaning utility on the maintenance screen. It uses a few sheets of papper to run them but it did fix it temporarily. The problem kept coming back after a few prints Frown
