That's because the sensors used by these Melissa and Doug puzzles are light based. They are meant to be played in direct light and when the puzzle peace "covers" the sensor, the sounds is triggered. But even an accidental shadow by your kids hand or arm, anything will trigger the sounds.

Based on reviews, seems so so because sounds go off even if wrong. But seems to be a good puzzle
