Trying to find an affordable jumping-on point to surround sound to complement my Sony 77" OLED. Is this a good system?

Any system like this is miles better than no system or a cheap soundbar.

I'd have to agree with the other comment..I have a Definitive Tech 5.1 system and its miles beyond the speakers in the LG OLED. Speaking of such how do you like the Sony? I ask because someone I know in SF is moving and offered to sell his 1 year old LG OLED65B3 for $700 or less..My 55" LG still runs well but there's no getting around that more screen real estate is nicer..

I'm surprised the Polk XT series doesn't get more attention. I initially picked up the XT15s to try as desktop speakers. From a budget bookshelf perspective, they sound significantly better than the much-lauded Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-BS22-LRs, and I quickly sold the Pioneers. I've since picked up a pair of XT20s as well.

Giving my thumbs up for Polk Audio. Brought a 5.1 system of monitor 70s, 30s, cs1 and their 12" sub back in 2008. Still love it and they still rock!

For home theater, I think so value wise. This set plus one of the 7.2 channel receivers that go on sale regularly will likely be very satisfactory. That's right around $1000. Keeping the receiver the same, you'd have to appreciably increase your budget before there's much more performance to be had. I think most would agree that replacing/adding a more highly regarded sub is a direct upgrade path with the most bang for your buck. There is a Klipsch RP set that goes on sale regularly also. Many would prefer that set, and you should try to listen to both before buying. Personally I prefer the Polk sound, but I'm just as focused on music as I am theater. If I were starting fresh, I'd buy a pair of those Polk R700 and an RSL 10e and buy whatever center and surrounds I could scrounge up until I could afford to upgrade them.

I decided to go Klipsch for my jumping on point because its the best price/performance ratio for value and home theatre IMO. Its not the best for music, but you'll have to spend much more to get more than the value from Klipsch.

For $700 for the whole system (5.1 minus AVR), these are hard to beat as a comparable Klipsch RP system would be at least $2200 on sale.

  1. It's more expensive.
  2. It doesn't include a subwoofer.
  3. A lot of people don't like Klipsch. If you ask all the pretentious, but probably correct people in Home Theater / Audiophile forums, they'll tell you that Klipsch tends to be inaccurate in terms of frequency response, and that the treble boost combined with the copper woofers is fatiguing/shrill on the ears. Maybe it won't bug you, but maybe it will.

This Polk is definitely a better deal, and probably a better sounding system to most ears.

No kidding but how this compares to ever famous magnat 1002 super deal? It's almost double the cost, so keeping that in mind,I don't mind returning magnet to adorama nyc store, as long as experts think this deal is a Total upgrade 😀
