Warning you now, run from Arlo. They were great a long time ago but sadly turned into garbage: failed hardware, awful software, subscription required PER camera, etc. They have changed the subscription model now, but still be warned.

Read the 1 star reviews - rough. It isnt from people complaining, it is from people who come across the real issues are the Arlo garbage.

I spent $2k on their garbage, and I had issue after issue with them. They would open a ticket, then "resolve" it days later with zero contact or resolution.

I got this product last BF to see if I wanted to update my existing several Arlo Pro 3 set. I do have the basic subscription. They have recently changed the tiers so that the basic sub doesn't get you the same level of activity recognition it did before, and I'm not eager to upgrade. It's not flawless, and battery life has decreased greatly over the year so that I now run it to a (fortunately) nearby outlet and keep it always powered. That said, it still basically works and I'm not going to tear down my setup, though I'm not excited about it and probably won't bother to get more even at this low price and even though I'm already in their ecosystem.

I've had Arlo for about 5 years. Works fine. I just use it to monitor my house. I don't have subscription, so nothing fancy. My brother-in-law has it also, seems to work for him. He has some type of subscription because he's sent videos of wild animals in his yard occasionally. I had a connection issue once and had to reset them all, that was a couple years ago.

Subscription is it required?
No, you can use the USB to store the video, I am using this at home now and no need to subscribe.

I've had a bunch of issues with Arlo but it mostly works fine but since I'm already invested and my wife makes more cameras it makes sense for me to get a couple more cheap.

I've used arlo devices for a few years. I don't pay for a subscription, and the number of full-screen upsells I get in the app is really annoying. The motion detection isn't good either.

I'm in much the same boat as you. Bought like $1,300 worth of cameras, doorbell, and a hub from them about a year and a half ago based on my FiL's good prior experience with them. I am technically and mechanically inclined, have been building my own computers for over 25 years, and am familiar with multiple operating systems.

Installing and getting all the cameras working involved me spending at least 6 hours on the phone with tech support, all of which was based offshore and they'd make me go through 20 minutes of the same exact steps I'd previously tried every single call. Some issues were never resolved, such as the doorbell camera and audio being so slow to load that it would literally take 1-2 minutes from when someone rang the bell and I tried to load live video before I got a picture, and the audio delay when trying to speak to someone was 15 seconds at minimum, it was often longer. (I've got AT&T fiber with excellent speeds that supports multiple devices and TVs streaming at 4k simultaneously, and excellent wifi coverage.) I now have a Google doorbell and just keep the cameras for live viewing.

I will never buy more Arlo products, nor will I EVER recommend them to other people.

I personally am using Lorex. Took some time to get it perfect, but it has been fantastic since.

Lorex - would you say a neophyte could use it successfully? I'm not a luddite, but I'm no tech god either. And would it work in the woods?

I have about 10 acres where we have lived relatively trouble-free for 25 years but we got a problematic neighbor recently. It's time to monitor for the first time ever. I need enhanced wifi coverage because we get one bar of cell service here. And tough equipment. I can get wifi boosters easily enough but the equipment is holding me back.

Arlo would absolutely not be there solution in your case.

Lorex has wifi cameras, but as with any brand it will be dependent on your wifi strength. Sounds like wifi coverage is your first issue to resolve.

tx, and yes, agreed on the wifi. I can get that sorted.
But my worry is ease of use (don't need constant trouble-shooting and I don't have advancd IT chops) and toughness of equipment - it'd be outdoors in PA weather.

You need to be a savvy, but hardware and software. However, it has a friendly user interface. It will take a lot of tweaking, but once you get it perfected, it works very well.
