Great Deal... Except
You're paying tax on the full value of the phone ($449), so it's $99 after a trade in, but taxed as if it's full price.

Mine jumped from $99 to $143.99 (CA Tax)

Caution - They might decline trade in credit and charge back $350 on you (people got burned with this before). That will make a refurbished S21 an absolutely disaster deal.

I will give it a hard pass on this "deal", period.

S21 came with 3 years of Android upgrades. It should get Android 15 before losing support next year. The S22 came with 5 years of Android upgrades, plus 2 additional years of security updates. I'd go with the S22.

I see... technically OP should say "any uncracked smartphone". I have an S10e (which I guess is what they mean by S10 lite) but it has a cracked back. The offer moves to $150. I wonder if the phone needs to be operable. I might have another that bricked.

Nevermind, I see where the trade in device needs to be fully functional.
Looks S21 with $99 after tadein is out of stock now

S21 is pretty much at the end of support. It's definitely not getting A16. Is it getting A15 right now?

Deal is not good with just any smartphone. Needs to be on their list they will accept.
There is actually an option called Other and then you can pick other Android phone.

yes, other android option
where are you seeing "other android option" or "other brand". I don't see anything in the list of brands that say Other (only O is Oneplus)

On the drop down menu it is below Huawei and above Wingtech at the very bottom

Bummer. I had a Windows phone I thought I could cash in on, but other changes to "Other Android Smartphone" after you select "other."

This is a bit misleading. These prices are not for "any phone".These stated deals are only if you are trading in a top of the line last years model mobile phone.
confirmed with their online chat that they would accept old android phones that are not included explicitly on their list e.g. LG G5 in my case. just select "other android phone". make sure it meets other criteria i.e. no cracks, powers on, factory reset, etc.

to be sure, i saved a copy of the chat conversation as well.

S21 will be supported through January of 2026. It is eligible for Android 15 update.

can you use a burner card to avoid that?
I thought about that too, but I think they will go after you some other way since they have your name and address.

Why is this so popular? I mean it ok if you have an old phone laying around, but with so many deals on much newer phones, this is ok, especially it's not the ultra variant of the s series.

Don't let me get in the way of your California hate boner, but Texas actually pays a higher effective tax rate (i.e. sales/property taxes) than California for the median household, 12.73% vs 8.97% per WalletHub.
Wallet hub?
To determine the residents with the biggest tax burdens, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on the cost of three types of taxes—property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes—as a share of total personal income in the state.

The following are some key findings from WalletHub's study:

California has the highest individual income tax burden, while seven states (including Texas, Florida, and Washington) have the lowest.

Be careful with the spray from my California hate boner. Big Grin
