Open-box ROG Ally is about the same price at Best Buy. I wasn't a fan of the Deck's materials quality, size, or (especially) the LCD screen. Now that Bazzite is being developed for the Ally, I'd almost argue it's the better investment at this point in the game.

That said, the Deck does have a massive and active community, so any problem you have will be documented somewhere else. Valve also partneredwith iFixIt and repair parts are readily available.

And then when the 2 comes out, you'll say something else is weak and how you can't wait for the 3. Repeat.

Support is key, otherwise it just turns into a paperweight over time.

Sam's club has the Rog Ally for like $379, but after reading about issues like overheating, loud fans, button issues, and the sd card slot breaking, I think I'm going with the Legion Go, mostly due to the big screen. The Ally X looks tempting and like it's fixed a lot of issues, but I just can't see paying $700 (not sure I'd even use it much).
The only thing that worries me about Lenovo's handheld is how quickly they drop products that aren't selling well. They did something similar with the VRX headset just recently. Steam isn't going anywhere (and either is Lenovo) but it's definitely something to consider. Support could immediately dry up.

I purchased the Z1E awhile back and absolutely LOVE it. I'm well aware of the sd card issue, but thankfully it hasn't happened to me and I play games off it regularly. As for the other issues you listed, I don't have any of those either. When I bought my Ally I also bought the LeGo and ended up returning the LeGo due to major heat and fan noise/whine, and I wasn't a big fan of the dpad or weight either. I did buy the LeGo a second time when it hit $500 and returned it a day later because I just couldn't stand the heat and noise. My Ally runs cool and I can barely hear the fans.

I'd love to play the Deck in store, but as for now I can highly recommend the Ally Z1E at $450-$500 and the X (once it drops in price more).

Solid price, less than I paid for a refurbished one a year ago.

If you like the idea of playing PC games that rely heavily on the mouse, e.g. Civilization, the steam decks track pads give it a big advantage over other handhelds. Plus the customization options for the controls in each game are amazing.

OLED or Don't buy. woot

Also, Steam Deck weak ass cpu. Can't wait for Steam Deck 2.
After owning a deck, it's much better than people "claim" it to be. Sure there is better hardware out now, but it plays so many games just fine.

As someone who doesn't have a Steam Deck, but up until now missed everything going on, can anyone comment on getting one now and it's competition? Is it worth getting one now?
I am utterly out of date on any information for this, but looking to buy this year. Thanks in advance for help, repp for assistance!

Eh that's why I bought the same version but refurbished. Why pay the exorbitant premium for the OLED when this will be obsolete in 2 years when the new model is out.

Also depends on your expectations. I have my LCD set to 30Hz and have been getting 2.5-3 hours playing AAA games. That's more than fine for me as a travel device.

Do we think there will be better prices this week on refurbished ones or is this a good deal? Thanks!

man I love my 512gb LCD w/ antiglare. 200 cheaper than OLED is a real consideration in this economy and mine's been running like a champ. Valve has worked very hard to make things easier for pc gamers, amazing control customization and options. They deserve all their rewards. Just imagine if Microsoft or EA had built up the "dominant pc game digital distribution platform". I don't even want to think about it.

Best value use is to play older games (probably like 2022 and earlier) that are in the 1-20 dollar range, save a fortune, they run great. you can cherry pick the best of the best or the best of your favorite genres at a great discount. It never pays to play cutting edge stuff unless there's a game that will really give you that much enjoyment for the money. A lot of the newer stuff is trash, too. There's a big game company crash underway, the industry will be better after some of these companies shrink or disappear.

Warning: be aware that many multiplayer games will not work. Apex was the latest to drop support (1 month ago).

This is due to Hackers utilizing SteamDecks/Linux to exploit due to it being easier compared to Windows.

I have had Ally Z1E since last year, no the fans are the quietest unless you pick 30W performance mode, and between all Windows-based handhelds it has the best support, BUT forget there's an SD card slot, it's over the vents and it'll be defective even In the newer models

OG Xbox, PS3 (a big chunk of the library) and WiiU,
It is a way better deal for emulation than Chinese retro handhelds
