Open-box ROG Ally is about the same price at Best Buy. I wasn't a fan of the Deck's materials quality, size, or (especially) the LCD screen. Now that Bazzite is being developed for the Ally, I'd almost argue it's the better investment at this point in the game.

That said, the Deck does have a massive and active community, so any problem you have will be documented somewhere else. Valve also partneredwith iFixIt and repair parts are readily available.

And then when the 2 comes out, you'll say something else is weak and how you can't wait for the 3. Repeat.

Support is key, otherwise it just turns into a paperweight over time.

It's a 50WH battery instead of 40WH. There's no way you are getting 'double the battery life' let alone triple.
Actually, based on the reviews, it is somewhat close to twice the battery life, depending on your load.

It's not just a larger battery, it's also much more efficient node that the APU is on.

It's similar to the V1 Nintendo switch versus the V2 or OLED.

Don't worry about the different (less power hungry) processor, the lower cooling / fan requirements also due to the new processor, or the fact the OLED screen draws less wattage too...those don't matter to battery life Wink

And yes, from my first hand experience I can easily play the OLED for over 3 hours when traveling. I was lucky to get 1 hour out of most games with the LCD Deck. So I think my assessment and the above video are a mic drop moment in this conversation.

"insanely longer battery life"

My goodman, you're not earning a commission!
Sorry, I was trying to match the absurd hyperbole of "exorbitant premium." That quarter a day over two years is likely to bankrupt the world bank Wink

Most of the time you are lucky to get a 10% increase of battery life between generations of similar devices, over double is pretty darn special if you ask about any mobile device user.

BTW, where is my commission check LMAO2

I bought one to plug into my tv and use as a console, it's the cheapest way to play steam games at home without a pc. Is there anything cheaper?

Well the number one complaint against the LCD Steam Deck was always battery life and not many of us like sitting next to an outlet when we use a portable device....especially when not home. Heck there is even an entire market for external battery packs and battery pack holders which attach to the SD. Must be for that 90%?

You know will really blow your mind, I used a laptop to post this comment....and it isn't plugged into the wall either. Neither is my cell phone. Crazy! "LoLz" type stuff. How did I survive?

You could probably buy a modest used gaming PC with something like a GTX 1060 and HDMI out which would perform better dollar for dollar (like a HP prebuilt). Your setup would be much easier to move place to place though.

Perform better or be the same at a cheaper price?

I think much better performance and at the same price if buying a used desktop. Frankly, as much as I love the Steam Deck I think you'll be disappointed trying to solely use it to output to a larger TV. I'm not sure the Deck could handle the resolutions you will want unless you are playing 10+ year old games or games with basic graphics. The Deck's native resolution is 1280 x 800 and with that resolution with modern games you frequently still have to mess with graphics settings to get a decent FPS. To most people that resolution is perfectly fine on a 7" screen but on a 32-60"? I don't think you'll like that at all. I could be wrong though.

Another idea is maybe buying a $400-500 gaming laptop with GPU? That will cost a little more but with a dedicated GPU should still run circles around the SD on a larger screen.

You may want to watch some benchmark videos to compare options.

You mean you don't sit within 6 feet of an outlet at all times?!? Is your phone at least connected to a generator when you aren't home?

Next time you go looking for an outlet in the airport / school / work to charge (insert any device) I want you to think about us and the other "90%" who aren't forced to be attached to that wall

And the battery isn't the only difference between the LCD and OLED....wonder would could be the other huge selling point between them? I just can't put my figure on it.

But to be fair, the LCD Steam Deck is still great.

actually you can pull the plug at any time and play for hours, and the OLED plays off the plug longer...but they both charge up fast when plugged in. and then you can pull the plug again. The oled is 250 higher there is no way that is a slickdeal in any universe. switch oled is a no brainer, deck oled is a serious brain teaser EEK!

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try the Steam deck at this price and see what I think.

Quit exaggerating. Worst case scenario for the LCD is around 90 minutes with a AAA title in performance mode with no cap on FPS. If you cap at 30FPS and limit TDP, you can likely get around 2-3 hours in most games.

Nobody is disputing the OLED is better. But at $213 more (62%), it's not just a "little" more. And again, it really depends on your individual gaming needs. I personally never play for more than 60-90 minutes at a time anyways and already have a 20,000mha battery for my phone and stuff when I travel. If you frequently play 2+ hour sessions on the go, then sure, the OLED is probably a better choice, assuming you can afford it.

But this deal, at $337, is solid if you are looking to spend less than $400 on a gaming device. Worse comes to worse, you can resell the 512GB LCD for around $290-300 for a small loss.
