Open-box ROG Ally is about the same price at Best Buy. I wasn't a fan of the Deck's materials quality, size, or (especially) the LCD screen. Now that Bazzite is being developed for the Ally, I'd almost argue it's the better investment at this point in the game.

That said, the Deck does have a massive and active community, so any problem you have will be documented somewhere else. Valve also partneredwith iFixIt and repair parts are readily available.

And then when the 2 comes out, you'll say something else is weak and how you can't wait for the 3. Repeat.

Support is key, otherwise it just turns into a paperweight over time.

actually you can pull the plug at any time and play for hours, and the OLED plays off the plug longer...but they both charge up fast when plugged in. and then you can pull the plug again. The oled is 250 higher there is no way that is a slickdeal in any universe. switch oled is a no brainer, deck oled is a serious brain teaser
I never said the OLED was a "slickdeal," who did? I was just saying it was worth the upgrade to many for the several notable upgrades such as the much better screen, quieter fans, cooler run temps, and far less trips sitting next to an outlet. You might not care, but "90%" of current SD buyers clearly do as they aren't buying the LCD version in droves. But their loss is your gain, either way I am sure you'll enjoy it!

Quit exaggerating. Worst case scenario for the LCD is around 90 minutes with a AAA title in performance mode with no cap on FPS. If you cap at 30FPS and limit TDP, you can likely get around 2-3 hours in most games.
I don't know. Far Cry 4 and 5 would kill my LCD battery in way under an hour. I was married to my Baseus battery bank back then but now barely use it except when traveling.

Nobody is disputing the OLED is better. But at $213 more (62%), it's not just a "little" more. And again, it really depends on your individual gaming needs. I personally never play for more than 60-90 minutes at a time anyways and already have a 20,000mha battery for my phone and stuff when I travel. If you frequently play 2+ hour sessions on the go, then sure, the OLED is probably a better choice, assuming you can afford it.
Amen, use case is going to be the number one factor. I travel a lot, even if I'm not paying in 2 hour stretches, finding a 120v plug (or HIGH wattage USB port) every single time I sit down between planes or switching seats isn't exactly realistic nor would I even want to. I also don't understand the people who have to plug in their cell phone every time they get into a new building or they have a panic attack because they are at 7%. Maybe I just enjoy not worrying about that stuff.

The OLED screen is also a big upgrade, many games I find much more enjoyable now vs when I attempted to play on the same game on the LCD. The LCD is fine for games that 'pop' but dark games like Thief could be really problematic in brighter ambient light. But back to use case.

No matter which model you pick it is the most competent handheld gaming PC under $800.

Sounds great until you buy a second charger and an external battery. You are already at $100 towards a OLED SD. Sometimes going cheap isn't the most economical route in the long run. But maybe it is for you, only you can decide for yourself.

I also don't drive a Ford Fiesta stick shift, no AC, with only a AM / FM radio. Do you? Heck, if you wanted to keep money in your pocket you could do a free crossword puzzle as opposed to buying a handheld gaming device.

Is there a way to buy games for this from the sale as Christmas gifts? I don't want to ruin the surprise by sending it to the account.

Calm down there, Mr. Ford firsta. No one said the oled isn't better, but it's not a deal. We are here looking for a deal. Bang for the buck. So I'll take your suggestion and play with that free cross word puzzle while I wait for the deal for that oled.

I'm not the one who thinks having $350 is normal but $350 + $200 is Bill Gates money.

Odd, because that seems to be the theme here.

"No one said" it was "a deal." LOL....for someone who seems obsessed with what has been said you are really bad at keeping track of what has been said.

Exactly, bang for the buck...what I have been talking about. Assuming the extra $200 aligns your use case. Your Ford..."firsta" isn't always a "deal" when you need a pickup truck. That saved money can cost you over the long run. 'Buy once, cry once' sometimes is correct. Sometimes it isn't.

I'm not the one worried about money not sitting in my pocket...you are. I know my use case justifies the difference. Yours might not, great. But you also seem pretty darn upset that I won't side with you. Does my opinion about my OLED Steam Deck make you second guess your LCD?

Feel free to have the last word, clearly you need it.

There are Steam gifts but I think they are instant.

Another option could be buy from a company like Fanatical or Humble (both legit sellers), then not 'reveal*' the key until you are ready to gift. At that point you could email or text the key. Both companies are doing sales right now for BF.

*you could actually reveal the key at any time but after revealed you cannot ask for a refund so might be safer to buy then get the key later.

as someone that sold their LCD Steam Deck for the OLED one i can confirm it's a HUGE upgrade Valve really undersold. Not only are you getting an oled screen but one with a higher refresh rate and lower latency and better touch response, as well as improved buttons and a more responsive touchpad. Not to mention it's lighter, has better battery life and better cooling. The LCD one is only an option if you're just a cheapskate at this point

It sucks that a lot of multiplayer games don't support it due to anti-cheat, but then again not everyone is into them and would be better to play competitively on a proper pc rig anyway
Thanks for validating that I was indeed a fool! Haha. I should have ruthlessly scalped my steamdeck and profited as I took relatively early delivery, like another SDer mentioned they did on this thread. The screen with its bad colors and low refresh rate were always the weak point and I should have just got an oled.

On the bright side I wasted money but I also gave it to Valve, one of the top 10 companies I would love to support.

Man, just paid $359 for the refurbished 512GB LCD less than 2 weeks ago. Wonder if they'll refund.
Seems you can cancel within 14 days.

Calm down, Mr. Ford fiesta. Nothing you say is wrong. You bring valid points. Don't let ppl here hurt your ego. We're all just here trying to find a deal. Paying MSRP isn't a deal.
