As far as cast iron goes, it's probably a far safer alternative than Teflon, stainless steel or aluminum.
Cast iron is not a non-stick surface. The non-stick properties they have are from seasoning with fats at high temperatures and are generally considered safe or harmless.
PS: This is a hell of a deal for a basic skillet and gets favorable reviews.

Try it, when you love it you can just keep using this one, or if you feel the need, upgrade to a name brand.
I use my cast iron pan (no brand) at least weekly, sometimes daily for everything.. cornbread, deep dish pizza, and of course any type of meat that needs searing. Cast makes the best steaks and chicken thighs EVER!

Since you're new to cast iron, always bring the skillet up to temperature slowly. Cast iron doesn't like it when you put a cold skillet on a blazing hot burner.
Happy cooking - enjoy your new skillet!
I can't subscribe to sending a piece of cast iron halfway around the world just to save $5 or whatever over a Lodge or any of the other American cast iron manufacturers.
