3 blades, 10,000 RPM, reversible blades. Does not look like you can get anything better under ~$600.

This is the same machine as the Ridgid R4850 (Delta made the R4850 for Ridgid) that was on sale last month for $129. Every HD around me has sold out of the R4850 for weeks now but you might get lucky and find it near you.

If not, this is a great deal because I doubt you will find any other reputable planer for under $300. So far the cuts have been great with this as I haven't noticed any snipe on any of the boards I've used with it.

I figured it had a Rigid equivalent but I couldn't confirm. Thanks for the feedback. There are plenty of solid reviews on the Rigid but few on the Delta.

I wonder if this is compatible with the older (assuming) model that you can buy helical head for. I had the DeWalt planer years ago and of course, I sold it after I stopped using it but now I may need it again.

It looks like Byrd makes a Shellix head for the 590 which I assume would be interchangeable with the 590x.

Here you are. It's not cheap but everyone says helical is the way to go. Like I mentioned, I've been very happy with the cut quality (I have the R4850 but they are essentially the same). So I don't see myself forking up the money for this anytime soon. You will have to install this yourself and keep in mind once you do put this on your planer, you are voiding the 5 year warranty.

My old Delta planer from the 90s is showing its age. I was just thinking about a new one. Great deal, in for 1. Thanks!

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of buying it cheap? I feel like if I would buy this helical head, I'd rather buy one of the better ones?

The better lunchbox (benchtop) style planers up to $600 all come with straight knives like this Delta. To get this style with a helical head you need to buy the aftermarket upgrade and your total investment will be $1k+. Oliver makes a lunchbox planer with a factory spiral head but it's $1100.

I guess it depends...I had DeWalt with helical upgrade but of course, I used it for a few months and started to collect dust. I'm not sure now after reading some of the reviews.
