I don't know what's with Synology pricing. I've been waiting for this to be on sale again but it's not going back to lowest deal points. Considering we have to spend another 400 on drives it will be around $1k in order to store files locally. For most people this is too much to give up convenience of cloud storage and synchronization of images and files.
I want to use this exclusively for pictures and stop syncing with iCloud or Google and migrate from Smugmug.

You're probably shopping for too high end of a model if the competition is One Drive, Dropbox, and the like, and you're complaining about price. They have a model (DS223j at $160 right now) that is usually under $200.

I get it. This isn't the BF deal we want on this model. I've had my eye on this for a couple weeks. But compare it to reasonable things at least.

Showing on my end $578
I do not see it anywhere lower than my post. And since I need it now. Comments saying $480 2 weeks ago are pointless.

I have a 3070 laptop running Plex connected to 18tb external drive.

should I get a NAS and connect to laptop or just build a whole new server tower PC/nas thing that holds 4 internals ...

anyone advice?

It was. I bought it at $489 (in stock) on Amazon from a third party seller. Two days later they messaged saying it was out of stock and asked me to cancel order. Ended up getting it from Newegg.

Agreed, very lame that there haven't been deals on their premier NAS products, usually a staple of Black Friday the past couple of years.

If you get a NAS make sure it is one with an intel cpu for plex. The 923 is amd. Look for the 423 or older 920.
