What a thefty RF tax.
Refurbed EF 50 1.2 is $600 and in stock for at least half an hour last Thursday midnight.

The RF 50mm 1.2 is a totally different beast of a lens than its older EF cousin. Same goes for the 85mm. There are also multiple EF revisions of lenses -- take the EF 16-35mm L lens. There are THREE different models, each indicated by a I, II, or III.

What I'm saying is...the RF 50mm isn't a tax, but a genuine improvement. Same for many of the lenses on the RF platform.

100%. The 50 1.2 RF is one of the best, if not the best, lenses I've ever used. The EF version was a pain to use with slow AF and very soft wide open, not to mention the EF is an almost 20 year old design.

Some people just don't know what they're talking about.

I totally agree that RF 50 F1.2 is better than EF 50 F1.2. However for double the price (either new or refurb), RF version didn't deliver that much of an improvement.
Per DXO's review, RF 50 F1.2 can't event beat Sigma 50 F1.4. It didn't win over competitor (Sony, Nikon) either.
I'm a Canon user, but overall the pricing on RF product line and its RF mount ban on full frame third party lens companies are quite disappointing, especially comparing to Sony and Nikon.

These new 50mm f1.2 lens prices are just nuts both by Canon and by Sony.
Sigma gives you much better value if you're on Sony. Still nuts though compared to what 50mm lenses used to cost. Yes, modern 50mm lenses are sharper than the old, 1970s designs. But still. At least the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E is "only" $739 on sale. That's a brilliant lens. Can't wait for the Chinese (e.g. Viltrox) to come to the rescue in the next year or two!
