The DiscoverIt card finally has value this quarter for those that also have Target and Prime 5% cards. (Amazon & Target are Q4 5% categories.)

Edit: I did a chat on discover.com and asked if I could get a retention offer since I was considering cancelling and immediately got offered a bonus 3% extra Cashback for three months effective the next day. Worth a shot to get 8% CB with your Discover card instead of 5!

No. Target GCs do not get a 5% discount using the Red Card. But Discover Card will payback 5% for Target purchases this quarter.

So I guess this means it's safer to buy the gift cards in store instead of online for delivery? I need to get some physical gift cards as gifts for others.
I mean, I'm paranoid about this stuff esp if I'm doing over $100 worth of GC, I'd prob do it in person and I also save/scan the receipt so I have a record of it.

Will it be risky to buy physical card and mail to me?
I would like to buy some physical cards for Christmas presents.
Not necessarily risky in terms of theft but when I ordered them last year they took forever to ship. I would purchase online and convert them into physical cards if you're not able to stop in today.

I think the Chase Amazon credit card is also giving 5% reward points
If you are referring to the grocery, gas, restaurant offer, then it won't be valid since Target, both in person and online, is coded as discount store by chase. Walmart in person on the other hand is coded grocery

No, and it's not as good as it sounds anyways. Already get 5% with Target Credit. This is basically an extra 5% off...

Worthwhile for those who can get extra back through other payments I suppose.

Last year there was a general 15% off promotion that worked on giftcards, bought $800 worth then. Was hoping for that again.
Discover Card to buy it. 10% Target discount on buying the gift card.
Discover Card credit for Target spend. 5%. Quarter category. That's 15%. Total.

Math changes depending on what CC you will use.

For those with a Red Card, myself included, it's just under 10% since I would get 5% anyway.

Hmmm, if you use Citi Double cash, the discount will be just under 12%. If you use a debit card, the discount will be only 10% and if you use a standard 1% cash back card, the discount will be just under 11%. If you pay interest on your credit card balance, that's something else, and depends on the rate on the credit card debt. If you buy the gift card and then pay say 22% annually, it'll be like 110% cost, so just saying, these things can go on and on

I still have the $500 GC from last year. Target prices are normally 10% higher than Walmart and other stores, so .....
Target price matches Walmart.
https://help.target.com/help/targ...rice+match

Be aware, Walmart prices are often higher in-store than shown online. Walmart will match their own online prices if you ask. (As long as it's actually sold by Walmart, not some 3rd party.) Read Walmart's price match policy carefully.

I'm pretty sure I was able to make multiple purchases in previous years, but it looks like they are restricting it to one transaction per account this year, so make sure you carefully think about how many gift cards you need, and buy them in a single transaction. I suppose you could create additional Target Circle accounts if you decide you want to buy more.
Last year (for sure) you had to clip a Target Circle coupon, so you had to buy all your giftcards in one go (unless you had multiple Circle accounts). Can't remember what the deal was in 2022. But I think you are right that more than a couple years ago you could make multiple purchases - I never bought more than $500 total (and usually less) so not sure if you could exceed the limit that way.

Quote from jackyang :
How can we buy two? Do we need two target accounts even if we go to store.
Yes. Each Target circle account is limited to $500, and one transaction only.

Category Coupon. Limit one coupon/offer per guest. Offer valid for one transaction up to $500 in Target GiftCards ($50 maximum discount) at Target or Target.com per Target Circle account. Transaction can include multiple Target GiftCards. Offer is redeemable only through Target Circle. No returns on Target GiftCards. Offer does not include Visa Gift Cards, Mastercard Gift Cards, American Express Gift Cards and gift cards issued by other retailers such as dining, lifestyle and entertaining gift cards. Offer excludes reloads of previously purchased Target GiftCards, Target GiftCards given in exchange for electronic or prepaid trade-ins, Target GiftCards provided for merchandise returns, Merchandise Return Cards and Target GiftCards provided as free promotional card with qualifying purchase. Quantities limited; no rainchecks. Purchases of Target GiftCards that exceed certain transaction limits may be voided.

If the GiftCard transaction exceeds $500, the $50 maximum discount may be proportionately allocated across all GiftCards in the transaction. Terms and conditions apply to gift cards. No other same department/category coupon will apply. Percent off coupon will apply to all qualifying items in transaction. Void if copied, scanned, altered, transferred, purchased, sold or prohibited by law. Item(s) may not be available at all stores. No cash value.

My AmEx card has 3% cash back on online purchases. My Chase Freedom Unlimited has only 1.5% back on all purchases. Perhaps should think about getting a Discover card next year.

I bought a Target gift card online with their 10% discount offer on Apr 14, 2024, and I got 3% back (AmEx). At the time, I was planning on buying an item online (combined with one of their Circle "bonuses" so the online gift card worked.

For the December gift card discount, I have bought mostly physical gift cards so I can get 10% off my purchases. (I give cash as gifts.) I don't like to order online for pick up; too much of a hassle.

I usually don't shop at Target online & don't use merchant's apps (too much of a security and privacy risk - they can be hacked, too, including by other apps, plus they spy on you), so don't usually buy gift cards online.

If they made it easy to convert digital cards to physical gift cards, I'd use my AmEx online and simplify my life. You used to be able to do that pretty easily, but they stopped that 5+ years ago.

Does this discount apply in store with physical Target gift cards?
Yes, I've purchased them even with self-checkout at brick and mortar store. If it doesn't show $450 at check out, just wave an associate down and they'll walk you through how to.

Had to hunt for this 1. This should be like the 1st deal on Slickdeals homepage for entirety of Sunday, 12-8-2024. Good deal, thanks for the annual Target GC deal reminder!

Unless you are spending the money over the holidays, buying gcs for a long term plan is a losing proposition now. Retail inflation which is higher than overall inflation kills any value you may get from saving. Plan accordingly

Not really true now. Somewhat true 2 years ago but inflation hasn't run 10% annually.
