I'm curious what you mean by this. I have been a Namecheap customer for slightly over a decade and been very happy. I barely deal with them though and they very well may have changed during that time. I login to renew (every few years) and update DNS settings occasionally. For that, no dark marketing tactics encountered.

What is the nefarious design that you see?

Namecheap is so sleazy. Navigating their website is like a trip through every dark pattern and scummy tech sales bro meme imaginable.

$7.49 is a black Friday deal for a .com domain? Am I missing something? Doesn't seem like a BF deal at all.

Was in the same boat a few months ago. Ended up moving them to cloudflare. They charge the same amount as the official fee (so no profit whatsoever) and they have a free DNS service that may be sufficient for your use case. There are limits on numbers of records I believe, but it was fine for me. Only downside is I believe you can't set the nameserver records on the domain if you were to run your own DNS server.

Cloudflare

Most of my domains are with namecheap but their .com renewals have gotten expensive ($17) so I've been transferring them out. Cloudflare renewal is $10, plus their control panel is better imo.
