I personally would go m12 fuel with bigger capacity batteries if I was just starting out. Only thing I chose non-fuel for is the ratchet.

They're light, powerful, battery lasts forever (even the 1.5ah). I have since gotten the larger batteries though and other m12 tools like the rotary tool, reciprocating saw, flash light, and hackz all. All of them are great. I have the circular saw too, it's perfect for small jobs.
I'm considering a few m18s for a bigger job coming up (specifically the framing nailer).

Sadly even in the professionali world I have seen such amateurish and silly stuff when we had installers installing doors windows and associated hardwere with to powerful and high RPM tools. Literally saw tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of damaged product caused by the more power crowd.
My dentist must be a fool as he has access to a jackhammer yet uses those low powered tools. It was not the cavemen that could only think of a bigger stick or rock that advanced civilization along with its tools and techniques.
These tools will serve its purpose well. Are you DIYer building decks and cabinets? If not and just the occasional drilling and driving this m12 set is fine.
