I have so many M12 tools and almost bit on this just to have spares. Until I saw the batteries were 1.5ah. I think it's still a decent deal. But I just can't with the 1.5

Would I regret this as my only set being non fuel and a diy'er?

Depends what you are doing with them. I bought into the m18 line many years back and they are still kicking to this day. I've recently started picking up more and more m12 tools and haven't run into a lack of power issue yet (talking about hammer drill, impact driver, impact wrench) and really enjoy the weight difference.
I personally would go m12 fuel with bigger capacity batteries if I was just starting out. Only thing I chose non-fuel for is the ratchet.

M18 Fuel or bust
I wish I had M18 for the yard tool stuff, but I'm all in on M12 and have no regrets. Might be different if I was a serious contractor, but for small remodels and tasks, I'll take the smaller, lighter weight tools all day long. They are still put together like a tank and work like a beast.

I got this set as a gift when I bought my house about 5-6 years ago and I love it.
They're light, powerful, battery lasts forever (even the 1.5ah). I have since gotten the larger batteries though and other m12 tools like the rotary tool, reciprocating saw, flash light, and hackz all. All of them are great. I have the circular saw too, it's perfect for small jobs.
I'm considering a few m18s for a bigger job coming up (specifically the framing nailer).

I would say you would regret this as your only set. I'd go 18 volt Milwaukee or Makita as your only set. I honestly don't think Fuel is necessary for a DIYer, I have many brushed tools that are 15+ years old and I'm probably an above average DIYer. I have this set and it works great for small jobs but struggles driving a 2.5" Sheetrock screw into a 2x4.

So there's also the M18 non fuel set and DeWalt 20V MAX brushless set for $149. Would they be good or might be better to hold out for M18 fuel line?

That's why would go with the M12 Fuel. It's not my only set, I have way too many tools, but it will cover 95% of the common needs for a home owner.

I used this set at work and had the similar Bosch set at home and for my own jobs and got a very real world comparison.Thoroughly recommend the Bosch even if you have to step out of your world of batteries. Sound like what you would be doing anyway. I'm all in with Dewalt 20V but will always keep the Bosch.

Can see it here if interested.

Yes that is the power I need installing some door or cabinet hardware. I have noted that the manufacturers are aware that there is a bit dense "more power" crowd out there and they all now put notices that warranties are void on hardware and components that the "more power" crowd uses.

Sadly even in the professionali world I have seen such amateurish and silly stuff when we had installers installing doors windows and associated hardwere with to powerful and high RPM tools. Literally saw tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of damaged product caused by the more power crowd.

My dentist must be a fool as he has access to a jackhammer yet uses those low powered tools. It was not the cavemen that could only think of a bigger stick or rock that advanced civilization along with its tools and techniques.

These tools will serve its purpose well. Are you DIYer building decks and cabinets? If not and just the occasional drilling and driving this m12 set is fine.

I've had this set going on 10 years now, and love it. Several years ago I got the Fuel version since I'd heard it was so much better. Honestly, I'm not seeing it, and usually reach for the non-Fuel version if it hasn't been left somewhere else.
