Best HOB filters I've used - easily allows for custom media, so you're not stuck with just what the manufacturer produces (though fluval does make some great media)
The only real down-side is if/when the power goes out, the suction will pull the water out of the filter, making it unable to restart on it's own.
I don't know anyone who's been in the hobby for any length of time that would call the Aqueon filters better than the Aquaclear. The Aquaclear has been the gold standard of hang-on-back filter for decades. Now, the similarly designed (with the open basket you can fill with whatever media you want) Seachem/Sicce tidal is starting to have a lot of buzz, too. But those are the only HoB filters that most aquariasts choose, if they're not using a cannister filter.
Note that these are clearance prices, because Aquaclear has just released new and improved models. But my Aquaclear 50 has been running great for well over a decade!

The new redesigned Aqueon Filter is better and has better reviews. Bonus: Self primes after power outage and no noisy rattle lid or loud humming motor. https://www.amazon.com/Aqueon-Aqu...r=8-1&th=1

Great filters and tons of customizablity with the non-cartridge style filter basket.
For what it's worth, as long as you don't let the tank get super low, I never had issues with priming after power outage. First prime just requires pouring some water in the filter tank and turning on.
Not sure how pricing stacks up anymore as I bought mine ages ago, but it's a good filter.

I have 3 and have never paid less than I believe $28. This is a very good deal.

Great prices for great filters. They take much better advantage of the space than most filters. They're also extremely customizable. My only complaint is they can be a bit noisy, especially when the impeller is too clean. I wouldn't buy less than the AquaClear 50, even for a 10 gallon tank.

Bring up the water level and this won't be a problem.
Also like the filters. Mine are nearly a decade old and still going. Sometimes have to use a toothpick to push the motor into the magnetic field, otherwise awesome!!
I had an Aquaclear but had to replace it because if there is a power outage the pump does not re-prime itself. If I am on vacation and have a momentary power outage, the pump does not start back up.

True. The new self priming hob filters are a game changer. You don't know how important it is until you get a power outage and realize the filter won't come back home unless you're there to fill it

Got it down to 37.48 before tax. My tank is too close to the wall though.
Also the 25 percent off is capped at 30 just an fyi for folks.
