Best HOB filters I've used - easily allows for custom media, so you're not stuck with just what the manufacturer produces (though fluval does make some great media)
The only real down-side is if/when the power goes out, the suction will pull the water out of the filter, making it unable to restart on it's own.
I don't know anyone who's been in the hobby for any length of time that would call the Aqueon filters better than the Aquaclear. The Aquaclear has been the gold standard of hang-on-back filter for decades. Now, the similarly designed (with the open basket you can fill with whatever media you want) Seachem/Sicce tidal is starting to have a lot of buzz, too. But those are the only HoB filters that most aquariasts choose, if they're not using a cannister filter.
Note that these are clearance prices, because Aquaclear has just released new and improved models. But my Aquaclear 50 has been running great for well over a decade!

True. The new self priming hob filters are a game changer. You don't know how important it is until you get a power outage and realize the filter won't come back home unless you're there to fill it
Have the original 300 (now marketed as 70) since 1996. Insert two sponges in the filter chamber for biological filtration. The filter will self-prime as long as the water level is within 3" of the filter's return lip. Use two 70 filters to achieve balanced filtration in a large tank.

youtube it. The Aquaclear are THE most commonly 'pimped' filter.
I had an Aquaclear but had to replace it because if there is a power outage the pump does not re-prime itself. If I am on vacation and have a momentary power outage, the pump does not start back up.
In addition to running the Aquaclear, I also run a sponge filter with a Lithium Battery USB Rechargeable Air Pump. It can run for a few days off of full charge in the event of an extended power outage.
I use these as pet water fountain without bio and carbon filter. Best thing ever. Someone mentioned Uv light going to see if I can add to it.
Unless your filtration system is hidden, you will want to be careful with that. The UV light needs to be contained/shielded and since the Aquaclear filter box is translucent, you can't just put one of those cheap unshielded ones in there. You don't want to subject your pets or others to direct UV light.

The (limited) general consensus is they are a marginal upgrade.
Less lid rattle (limited issue anyway) and the pre-filter sponge is always welcome, but performance wise they are similar. At the same price the new ones are better, but at this price? Not a chance.

The only real down-side is if/when the power goes out, the suction will pull the water out of the filter, making it unable to restart on it's own.

Got it down to 37.48 before tax. My tank is too close to the wall though.
Also the 25 percent off is capped at 30 just an fyi for folks.
